there's been lots of discussion on this recently, so here's my take...

for the info, since i know people will want to know and i can't leave ya'll hanging
1987 Porsche 944 with 214,000 miles on the original motor
1997 LT1 from a Pontiac Firebird Formula. Has LT4 hot cam, 1.6 aluminum roller rockers, dual 58mm throttle body and intake. Should be pretty quick.
I'm using a friends garage for the swap (he's a motorhead too so it worked out nicely). He's got a rolling block and tackle mounted to a huge *** I beam stretching the width of the garage. He's also a steel worker (welder) so he helped me make the motor mounts and modify the oil pan.
I pulled the engine out the top, it was not easy, but i didn't have the right equipment or setup to lift the car high enough to get the engine out the bottom. The only places i had trouble were the crossmember (where the old oil pan hit) and the alternator hit the frame i believe.
At the moment the engine is bolted in there, but the wiring isn't hooked up and i don't yet have a throttle cable. I also need headers (which i might build) and a different crank balancer to run the alternator.
Should be fun! I only have 3-4 weeks to get it mostly done (running) before it MUST be finished (school project...) so i've been really stressed the last week.
Here's a quick question for you gearheads. I'm trying to make my own steam pipe (the coolant steam pipe that goes between the back of the heads to vent the heads if the coolant boils). I don't have the original steam pipe, plus it'd be easier to run the pipe straight to the coolant overflow instead of around the front of the engine and then over.
So i need to find a 90 degree elbow and a T fitting that's 1/2in by 18 tpi (I think, i'll have that verified soon). I've tried Mcmaster Carr and they probably have it, but i called them and they weren't quite sure how to help me. Anyone have any ideas?

it made it a lot easier to get under the dash and disconnect the brake pushrod from the brake pedal (and get to the three nuts holding the cereal bowl on) when i removed the seat. Just gave me a lot more room to work in

Oooh, shiny.
Would like to hear lots more about this. I'm planning on having an LS engine dropped in later this year, so whatever mistakes you make, I can learn from, and whatever obstacles you hit, I can hopefully avoid.
Looks good so far, though.

Hey, nice job, i think i have seen you posting on the hybrid forums, I just placed an order for one of those bad *** adapters for the c5 bellhousing that one of the members is making. Good luck. You would probably have better luck getting your questions answered about the steam pipe from a chevy board.

god those just fit so nicely.
if and when i blow up my 2.5 with too much boost i will put one of these babies in. LS2
and then i could just take the SC stuff from the 944 engine and transfer it to the chevy
