My 89 S2 has the "check engine" in the cluster itself, but no bulb in its spot, nor has it ever. It wasn't used until 91 in the US.

Check engine light was introduced on the 1991 S2. This according to the 1991 Porsche Service Information booklet.

This is the gauge on my 1991 944S2. Apparently it should have a check engine light, but it doesn't. It says Servo instead.

Interesting... The 1987-1988 944S cars had a warning switch on the PS pumps that triggered a dash light if the fluid level dropped too much. Wonder if you have a gauge cluster out of a 944S.

Check engine light is below the air bag light on US and Canadian models. Do you have airbags? You should. If so the lack of an air bag light is puzzling too.

I have (had) airbags, but the wires had been cut so that a non airbag wheel could be installed.

Easy way to check would be looking at the tachometer redline - 944S was 6800, 944S2 was 6400?.

Also that wire on the PS pump has shorted out and caused fire/wire damage to more than a few 944S, good idea to cut the wire and install an inline fuse with low amp rating there.

I've got a 91 S2 and it has a working check engine light. What are the last four numbers of your VIN? Mine are 0346.
