Post How to dispose of used coolant/antifreeze?

I am in the process of cleaning up my garage, and I came across several gallons of used coolant / antifreeze from my rebuild earlier this year.

I went to several local discount auto parts stores, and they both accepted the used engine oil I also had accumulated. However, neither would accept antifreeze, and they didn't have any ideas on where to go.

What do you guys do to "properly" dispose of used coolant in an environmentally friendly manner?

Here, our city landfill sites (the dump) are happy to accept any chemical, paint, oil, anti-freeze, etc...

That's were I take mine.

Keep an eye out. Many communities have chemical collection days where you can go down and drop off stuff like that for 0 bucks.

Try to find the local greenie group and they'll know.

I would call a radiator shop and ask them what to do with it.

I worked next to an auto body shop and they would dump coolant down the drain. When one on my co-workers asked them why they were doing this, the guy from the body shop said it was okay because coolant made within the last few years was safe to dump there. Is there any truth to this, or was the guy completely full of it?

I'm not a chemist, but as I understand it, you don't want to dump this stuff down the drain. Best is to locate a recycling place like the guys above have suggested. In my town, we have "centers" where you can take car fluids, paint, and all kinds of stuff. Its a good deal and good for all of us living things.

I first ran into this issue a few years ago. Apparently it is OK to dump it in the sanitary drain system. It will break down just fine.

Call your metro waste commission if you don't believe me.

There is a quantity, (5 gal IIRC) that can be put down the drain. The sewage treatment facilities can deal with it. It's the storm water drains that you don't want to put it in. They go untreated into the watershed.

Please, take the extra time to recylce this stuff w/ your oil. brake fluid, used battrery's at you city's chem. disposal. Etheline Glycol is not good to drain-dump and make your local DWP to "deal with it".

Anyone who thinks killing a neighbor's dog with glycol is funny needs help.

This shuts down their kidneys and they die a terrible death.

If you have a problem with your "a$$hole neighbor", you should confront him not by cowardly attacking his innocent dog!

FYI,
the antidote for ethylene glycol is Fomepizole aka methyl alcohol, dose 15mg/kg IV.

let me put that in english, the antidote for antifreeze is a few shoots of 80 proof alcohol, IV. <img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" />

to your health <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" /> <img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" />

just FYI
