Dipstick hitting something 3/4 inch from all the way in??
Here's a new one. I checked the oil on the dipstick tonight for the first time since getting the car back from it's rod bearing and pan gasket replacement. When I put the dipstick back in, it seems to hit something 3/4 inch from all the way in (i.e., the bottom of the dipstick seems to make contact with something in the crankcase before the yellow handle is fully inserted). I tried turning the dipstick in its tube multiple times, wiggling it, pressing harder, etc. It's not going back in any further.
What could be causing this??? The only thing I can think of is that the shop did a modification to the oil pump pickup to reduce the possibility of starvation under cornering loads. This involved welding something to the pickup. Perhaps this is interfering with the dipstick?? What else could it be??

Look down and the dipstick and make sure is connected to the oil pan first. That thing is very easy to pull out if that one 10mm head bolt is gone. They might have put it back without placing it in right. It might be hanging over the side.

Good guess. The tube was indeed bolted in as it should be. I had better luck on Sunday -- i was able to get it in properly using a twist and jab method. Pretty strange, though, in three years and god knows how many dipstick checks it always went right in. Now it's very finicky. What could be in the way???
