Default Lots of oil in intercooler pipes and no turbo boost.

After last weeks problem of smoking out of the tail pipe when i over filled the engine with 2 quarts of oil I did the following..

I drained the oil, It looked clean no coolant.

Coolant had a very lil bit of gunnk but it always did.

One spark plug seem to have some oil on it.

Intercooler pipes had a good amount of oil in them, as did the intake manifold cupling/

My oil pan leak seem to get a lot worse.

So I cleaned up and I filled her up with oil and fluid again. I started her up and went for a drive and I have a loss of power, I barely step on it and the RPM's shoot up but no real power. The bar boost guage barely climes and moves around all crazzy.

So based on that did i somehow get oil into the turbo? or something else?

Do i need a new one? what other possible problems can it be?

Based on what I've heard from the TDI guys - you blew the turbo.

When it goes, you get a lot of oil sucked in teh intercooler and a lack thereof in the engine with a big puff of smoke to go with it. I'd replace the turbo and clean out the intercooler and piping.

Check for shaft play. Thats a nastier mess near the TB than my car had when my turbo was going out, it had enough shaft play that blades had rubbed a tad.

The black rubber-ish pipe that goes from the air flow meter box to the turbo. Its a couple hose clamps but be VERY careful, the rubber gets old and decayed from age and heat so dont be too surprised if it falls apart as you take it off.

Once its off, youll see the inlet of the turbo. In the middle is a large nut, just try and wiggle that. Its hard to describe how much is too much, I think the best way is that more than a sheet of paper or two (thickness) in any direction isnt good.

The black ribbed thing on the left is the J-Pipe that goes to the turbo. Its just a hose clamp.

Heres the turbo inlet. Heads up, if the blades on yours look like mine, thats BAAAAAD.

Mine had enough play in the shaft for the blades to almost touch the housing, I think it actually did a few times.

So what actually happened to you turbo? How did it get damaged?

What kinda of symptoms did you have?

Inhaled something, prolly a small rock that fell out of the air filter when I was doing other work. Inhaled that, it mangled the blades as you see (not much damage compared to bigger things like a bolt, Eyal951 had a bolt go through his and his blades were utterly mangled).

Symptoms, not much at first, but after a long time it started blowing more oil, taking longer to spool, not holding boost well, burning oil, etc. It lasted I THINK 10k miles or so like that, it took me a while to discover it and when I did there was only a bit of shaft play. Then it went downhill over the next few months and miles. I had other issues going on, it was basically a bunch of smallish issues that all combined to one big clusterpuck of a problem

Quick Reply: Lots of oil in intercooler pipes and no turbo boost.
