The A/C has been working fine until the other day. Turned the car off and when I restarted it the A/C didn't come on. I tracked it down to fuse #17 blown. replaced the fuse and almost immediately when you press the A/C button on it blows the fuse. is it the Compressor clutch causing the problem or am I in for a new compressor? anyone else experience this?

#17 is for heating control.

What could have gone wrong? it has been working since I purchased the car in Jan. Would it be the heater control unit or something else?

The same thing happend to me last year. Fuse 17 goes to the climate controls inside the car so it does heating, AC, fans, etc.

Make sure you don't make the same mistake I did and put a bigger fuse in there. I didn't have any of the right amperage fuses left so I put a larger one in. The ac worked great for about 20 min, then I ended up having thick electrical smoke come out of my controls as I burned up one of the electrical tracts in the control board.

I repaired the control board easily enough, but I've still not figured out what the cause was. I can't figure out what's wrong so I'm dropping it off at a shop on monday to fix this exact problem. I'll let you know what the results are.

when my compressor clutch made problems it smoked and smelled of burnt asbestos (i know this because it happened 2 days ago and now i cant drive it until i get a new one )

I had this exact problem!
Very interested in a writeup(and what shop has to say) on what went wrong.
You would think that Porsche had safe guards in place to prevent this.
I had the correct size fuse and it still burned out the control.
I was told a strained ac compressor could cause increased load on clutch and do this...

No news from them yet. The did not have a chance to look at it yesterday but should have today. I'll post more when I know it.

Check your grounds. Been a host of problems- known to blow auxilliary (even not associated) fuses.

OK, I heard from my shop today about the AC. It is pretty much what testarossa_td mentioned about a bad compressor fouling things up. The compressor strains the system and sucks more current then is usualy supplied to it. The extra current gets pulled through the controls and either pops the fuse or frys the board.

So you may be needing a new compressor. Vertex has a tempting new sanden one for $360 that I might get. On the other hand, I might just let the shop take care of it and save the hassle.

Thanks for the update.
I have kept my control unit disassembled, and plugged in to see if I could note any additional heat etc...and cycled the compressor on for a few minutes here and there at different engine speeds to see if there was any increase or damage. None to note but the fix I did for that part of the control circuit is also a lot heavier duty
I guess like you said time to flush and replace. Drier, AC compressor/Clutch.

I've just removed my a/c system from my '95 968 as of yesterday.

Somebody has already purchased the control unit, but the compressor, condensor and heater box are still available.
