Engine Removal..Up or Down?
(re: 85.5 NA 944)
Currently working on engine removal in my 944. A past Excellence article described removing the engine from the top. Most all other references describe removal from the bottom of the chassis.
Our current state: transmission removed, engine completely disconnected; bell housing disconnected from engine and torque tube; hoist on the engine..
Up or Down? To go up, it appears as if it must go straight up to ensure clearance between the oil pan and steerring rack/knuckle... but the bell housing won't reelease from the clutch (Did I miss a step in releasing the bell housing?)
To go down? A lot more work to raise chassis higher and remove the crossmember... (Also same bell housing release question...)
Need your experience and tips...Thanks in advance for your posts to help! ...

TAKE IT OUT THE BOTTOM.
Removing the crossmember is a piece of cake and you will thank me when you see how easy it is to take it out the bottom, vs. fighting with the clearance out the top. You can take the suspension out pretty much altogether as well.

Bellhousing won't come off until you remove the clutch pivot pin. You might as well go out the top from where you're at - pull the hood and pull the radiator, and drop the steering rack to disconnect the steering intermediate shaft and swing it aside.
