Default 944 turbo over boost

A friends having problems with his 944 turbo. The problem is intermittant, but when it happens, it always happens in the same way as follows.

Accellorating, full or almost full throttle... let off the throttle, change gear, push throttle no power (almost like hitting a brick wall).. engine idling fine(ish) but sometimes its idling rough at this point, but just bucks and bangs.. has to coast to a halt.

Leave it running for a while, and it often clears up.

Could a faulty bov be causing this? I have sucked on the vacuum port of the bov and its holding no vacuum at all (where as a new one seems to but we have not changed it yet)

On a few occasions, its idled really rough right from start up (has not done this in a while) and would not drive very well (hunting poping and banging) but when it cleared, it would always clear suddenly, like a switch was thrown.

The car is going into the local Bournemouth specialists this weekend, but it would be good to see if we can clear it up our selves.
