Blue loctite is a great idea, as it will allow you to break them loose (with a bit of effort) when the time comes.

I respectfully disagree with Danno. Do not re-use your CV bolts. I snapped a re-used bolt when reinstalling my CV joints, and was using a torque wrench set to 30 ft lb. They are very cheap, and will save you the extra hour of having to remove the entire joint just to get the fragment out. Also, like Kevin above mentioned, I used blue loctite and they have held fast without working loose.

For what it's worth, I have had my axles out three or four times over the past ten years. Not only have I always reused the bolts, I have never torqued them. I zap them in and out with a light duty 3/8" impact gun. They have never loosened up or broken. I'm not saying that Dr. Porsche would approve, but it's the method I use on my 944 and my son's GTi and Scirocco that use the same type of bolts.

Why are these bolts designed this way? They are made of a very soft alloy. Our PO must have replace the CVs at one point. We've had those bolts back out or shear off of 3 of the 4 CVs. I'm getting ready to install a new set on all 4 CVs. They have been safety drilled and I will be using locktite. Of our three failures (over a 5000 mile driving) none were under power or above 5 MPH. After all 3 we checked the torque and made sure all were within range. But still they broke/backed out. Were there to be lock washers with them?
