Post 924 vs 931 vs 924S

Hi guys,
I am looking for a winter car and figured why not go for one of these...
What are pros and cons of each series? Which has most hp stock, and which is easiest to modify?
Also, I am still undecided if I should choose between the 924 line or a 325 BMW (1987-1989)
Any opinions?

The 924 NA has a non-interference engine. You don't have to worry about your timing belt. You want at least a 1980 to get the good 5-speed. It produces 115HP stock in North American trim. You most likely will get rear drum brakes (4-wheel disks were an option). Of all the cars, this car will have the least expensive parts (for the engine).

The 931 has an interference design like the 944, but the timing belt is not as finicky. You want at least a 1981 so you get the good 5-speed and the 4-wheel discs. In North American trim the 931 produce 156 HP.

The 924S has a more modern engine. It is an interference design and you have to be careful to re-tension the timing belt often. In addition to regular tensioning, it should be replaced every 30,000 miles. The engine management is more modern and this makes the engine easier to service IMO. The 924S produced 150HP in 1987 and 160HP in 1988 in US Trim.

My money is on a 924S. They can be found for $3,000 US and are a great deal.

Dear Mike,
The 924 makes the best winter auto of the three you have noted. With a good set of winter tyres. even works in the mountains.
Check out http://Porsche911.isuisse.com click on rennlisters, scroll down this page until you find Winter Porsche, click on this and check out the page,

I'd have to agree with Tabor and choose the 924S over the Turbo as a winter car. The turbo will give you way too much power on slippery corners .

A 931 isn't a good winter car at all. If you can drive and keep the turbo from spooling your fine but as soon as boost builds past 5 psi the rear end cuts loose. If the roads are clean and dry, it of course does just fine until snow hits the ground again. I don't know how the 924s would be but the 924 should be allright. Good luck.

mike,

i have to agree with tabor and the rest. i have owned both a 1981 924 and now an 87 924s. i do live in hawaii however and do not need to worry about traction on snowy, slippery corners,

in my opinion the 2.5l engine in the 924s can be referred to as almost bullet proof if taken care of properly. this is coming from my old mechanic on the mainland who had a 2.5l engine with about 250k miles on it....his recipe for success is cahnge the oil often...every 2k miles and he does a timing belt every 10-12 oil channges or about 25k miles. he drives it everyday all winter long. his car is by no means a looker any more (would you be at 250k?) but mechanically is very sound. i havent heard of the 924s or 931s with this longevity..has any one else??

oh and i stole my 87 924s for only 2500...

good luck!!
