Post Interested in 931

Looking for some info about 924 Turbos. I am very interested in getting a 931 for a daily driver. I was wondering if someone could comment on the maintanance cost of a 924S vs. the 931. I think the 924S has more power (although neither is a screamer) and would probably be a little cheaper for maintanance. However the 931 is more unique and rare, as well as cooler looking (I think). Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Cool

Yeah go to www.924.org. There's excellent, knowledgable folk there who can help you. It's the preferred site for 924 material.

The 931 has much simpler engine management. However, the 1981/82 931s are more advanced than the 1979/80s.

I find the 944 easier to repair with its completely computer controlled fuel injection system. Plug the parts together and it does the rest. Note: I have never owned a 931, this is my opinion from outside observation.

Go with a 924S, parts are very hard to find for the 931 and it's more likely to break. The 924S will have either 150 or 160 hp and is faster than a same year 944 (smoother body). Besides, as far as looks, they'er the same except for the NACA hood scoop. Also the 924S has the same suspension as the 944.

Better support for maintenance and parts for the 924S/944.

Yes, agreed, the 931 is more fussy. Mine was about 170 HP when I got it. However, just as the 931 is fussy like a 930 is fussy, you'll find the difference in speed and performance between a 924S and a 931 pretty substantial.

e.g., 1 bar boost spring ($50) with a 0.2 bar spacer gives you enough horsepower to spank Mustangs. To get that speed in a 924S or 944 would require as much cash as it would take to buy a 944 turbo.

We just went through this. I was going to buy a 924S for my wife, however we went went with a 931 that was in near perfect shape. You get what you pay for. We paid about what you would for a nice S, however this car is faster and in most repects more car than the S. My wife has been driving it as a daily with no issues. It's running about 180HP right now with planes to GT it and fit a nice intercooler in it along with 1.0 bat spring or controller. Great little car and a dying breed.

Are you the guy who bought Jay's 931? All the guys on rennlist email board were complaining and hollering at him for the price he was asking, and look at what happened.

Had 2 82 931 "s. They are surprizingly quick.Had know problems with the 944 n/a and depending on the start mph the 924 s either. They are not the car for winter conditions tho. The parts are very hard to find. 1 was the sport version with all the options.

931 s are scarce. I got one for my wife (yeah right) and I think that there is a LOT of untapped potential in that 2.0 liter.

I'm not EVEn close to having hers(?) running, but I've put 951 brakes on it, and have an early HKS EVC for it. To do it right, an intercooler from the 951, a conversion to fuel injection and stand-alone engine management would make the car incredible! We have an '80 model, not the most desireable, but it has the Porsche/Getrag LSD 5 speed with the dogleg 1st.

I have to tell you, this car is way cooler than my 951, and MUCH more rare as well!

We are shooting for 200 hp to the wheels at less weight than the 951 in a street driven car.

Lar,
Sorry I never responded to your post. I must have missed it. Yes I was the one that bought it. There are some real pieces of junk out there for cheap money. We had already bought another and I threatened to shove it up the guys **** if he didn't give me back my money. He had to be a Photoshop expert. Jay's car wasn't cheap, but the difference from what we were finding was surreal. Real shame people have trashed them they way they have. We are currently having a 937 replica intercooler made and I will then bring the boost up after that. The car has all the goodies. That was the best part of the deal. She is still driving it daily...

Hi Keith: I'm doing a similar thing to mine, including a top-mount intercooler and higher compression Turbo pistons. Prior to the rebuild, I was getting around 190 HP ATRW even with 7.5:1 compression pistons and no intercooler...just upped boost and alcohol injection. Souping them up is easy but expensive.
