Thought this was an interesting photo. Note higher waist line and hood. Apparently not a function of pedestrian crash regs as some believe but more to do with 20" wheels and desire to "flatten" the look of the car.

Recall that overall height is actually 2/10" lower for 991 vs 997 despite higher waistline.

Your photo shows that although there are significant changes to the new car, the 911 remains timeless. They're both beautiful cars.. and I'm sure most guys would be proud to own either. I know I am.

In that photo I prefer the 997 Although, the changes are very subtle - especially for non Porsche-files.

Agree. I think the longer front overhang of the 997 works to it's advantage in that photo; the 991 nose looks more "stubby". Things improve greatly, IMO, when you can see the whole car.

I agree the entire package makes the front end befit the rest of the car for the 991. But my vote goes to the 997 on that shot. Thanks for posting. Nice one. The bulbous headlights do go well with that front end styling for the 991. Is it my vision or are they more convex than the headlights on the 997 ?

More convex. Michael Mauer has stated the goal was to carry the fender curve into the headlight cover.

If you look from the A pillar back there really isn't much difference. The higher line seems to be in the front fender, likely to accommodate the 20" wheels.

Aesthetically speaking, the 991 is a beautiful car. It, unfortunately, will initially compete with the outgoing 997, which is not only handsome but it has been around long enough for the general public to accept it has the standard by which past (since the 993) and future (991) will be judged. Tall order. Beautiful cars like the Maserati GranTurismo are luckier in that they have no predecessors (The Gran Sport was not a predecessor, for example)

I am in the same camp as many here in that the 991’s styling does not make me want to rush to the nearest dealer and plunk down my deposit. The 997, by the way, did. But, as time goes by, and the 991 will start to replace more and more 997’s on the road, it won’t be long before the outgoing model will start to look, well, “outdated”. It will happen. It’s inevitable. And I, like many of you P lovers, will eventually buy one. And we will all love it, too.

I think they both look great, and being 110k for the 991 plus options plus 13% tax in Ontario for the S, I don't think there wil be too many around to look at. Now as they get passed down and become used vehicles, "over to the States we go a shopin " !

Here's a shot I took of the rear ends--near each other. You decide which is better.

I think you mean 993 to 996. A 993 was only 15% new from a 964 and was a modified 964 chassis with the majority of the changes being exterior sheet metal and a different rear suspension (just like a 997 is really a modified 996 chassis). I noticed overlaying the 991 and 997 plates in my 991 launch kit that the front fenders are noticeably taller on the new car. The windshield is also significantly more raked.

For the last 2 generation changes, I think Porsche has been going the wrong direction on the rear end styling. I still like the rear end of a 996.2 Carrera over a 997.1 Carrera. It is far my symmetric and just looks right. The 997.1 Carrera back end looks to rounded, which was improved with the 997.2 styling changes. I don't like the way the upper bumper line where the spoiler is just sticks out, the way the taillights are sunken in or all the hideous chrome letters on the 991. The retro "PORSCHE" script just looks completely out of place with the rest of the script in more modern italic script. With previous generations, I never thought about checking the "model designation delete" option. With the 991, I would consider it mandatory. BTW, the easiest way to remove badging from a car without damaging paint is to use dental floss. Once the letters are off, use some Goo Gone to melt and wipe away the adhesive (help for anyone who makes the mistake of not checking this option).
