I am considering looking at a 914-4 that has been converted to a 914-6 using a 2.2l carbed engine and full steel GT flares. Has the 5 lug upgrade, brakes and 8" x 15" fuchs on four corners. Claims over $60k spent on upgrades and conversion.

That is the good news. The car needs to be looked at closely but limited rust so I am told and doubt. Paint is shot and although engine turns freely it has not been started in years so I don't know what is needed there. Interior is basically gutted and in rough condition.


I now it is little to go on but what is this worth? I can see spending some big money trying to bring it back to a nice ride and making it a street car is a consideration.

If anyone has a rough idea what to offer I would appreciate it. I figure I can repaint and do the interior for around $9k. I have access to a shop and would do most of the work myself. I can rebuild the engine if needed but will be an expense. All fuel lines and everything would need to be redone. Is it worth doing? What might a car like this be worth when I am done? Might decide to keep it and again might sell it afterwards. I have restored several 914's so I am versed in their issues and mechanicals. Easy enough car to restore and I am looking for a project. Since air cooled 911s are too costly I figured this might be a fun project.

Hi Anthony - I would consider the engine a rebuildable core, so figure $8K-10K to freshen it up assuming nothing broken. Then figure about $8K-10K for getting it in color and $3.5K for interior refresh/sourcing. I would consider the ceiling to be around $25K based upon description, if I were considering buying it. Just my thoughts - good luck.

I think most would consider 25k way overpriced for that car. Maybe half that.

The 60K invested?....car should be almost done for that. If engine needs work, body work and paint, needs interior. I'm with the rest, 25K is to high. Best, Mark

Hey A, I know the feeling. Nothing wrong with taking your time in designing, planing and layout your goals once you have a concept you are happy with. I urge you to get an open source CAD program, so you can design your build from interior to exterior and motor suspension,etc. Why? because it will keep a record of your designs and add on ideas as you come across, pictures, articles, emails and exchange of ideas with other enthusiasts are you best references to look back to.

Rear bumper is molded carb.fiber using a 915 bumper that I cut to fit for mold.

you could buy a nice finished drivable conversion for the same parts money sum

these cars are just a hobby - so time & money "invested" is just an e-ticket ride at Disneyland

with the price of a real 914-6 so expensive these days, the conversions are real bargains and do not last too long
