Dropping Heat Exchangers on a '75
How the hell do you get the top bolts off on the forward connection between the headers and the heat exchangers themselves? This on the 1.8 L engine.
I had a '71 many moons ago, the exhaust was much simpler to drop (other than the risk to breaking the exhaust head studs). Buddy's son just got himself a fairly nice '75 and we're going through it little by little. Any help is appreciated.
Also, just noticed the air control bellows cable is broken. I heard the bellows was NLA, but there may be a VW or some other part that is a direct replacement. Anybody have a part number for us?

Not familiar with later exhaust systems, especially if it's a later model with CA emissions, but try asking over at 914 world. Lots of info there.

Well we got it done, finally. Had to go buy an air hammer to break the damn nuts and bolts off.
Found a place that sells new thermostats.
Now we're chasing down an issue with the air flow meter. Ain't these things grand???

It's intermittently sticking, sometimes at part throttle, mostly at full deflection though.
Car's running rich now as well. Plugs are black now. A month ago they were pretty decent.
As near as we can tell the car is unmodified as far as the fuel injection and ignition systems are concerned.

if the air flow meter flap is sticking, it MUST be replaced with a rebuilt one, sticking will of course make the car run rich and dilute the oil as well. The flap sticks most after the engine is well warm (when it needs to be the leanest!) and all of the metal (including the air flow meter) expands. I think that air flow meter replacement will immediately solve your rich problem

we have many rebuilt on the shelf, have them rebuilt by fuel injection corporation, they take awhile and are sort of hard to deal with now that the kids have taken over the dad's business, but do a good job.
