Question HELP! Porsche 914 Paint Code

Dear Rennlisters,

I have a 1975 Porsche 914 2.0 that was repainted in silver in the 1980's. My father (who bought the car in 1986 and painted it) told me that the original color was a very light metallic green. I tried checking the paint code on the "Kunstharzlack" Plack, on the direver's door, but I can't understand what it has marked on it, It seems something like "L 97" but I am not sure. There are some spots in the bodyshell where the original color can still be seen, and it really looks like very light green, almost silver but not quite.

Here, the original color can be seen

And here is the plack with the color code

If more pictures are needed, tell me! I really need to know the original color's code, I am thinking about painting the car, sooner or later.

Looks like L97 A, which would be Diamond Silver Metallic. Is it possible it was painted green before your father got the car?

I thought Diamond Silver Metallic also- based on the paint code. Guessing the car was painted prior or, perhaps the color has changed slightly with age. I know the original silver metallic on my car had gotten a nearly green hue with age.

A crazy thought, knowing that 914's have all kinds of anomalies coming from the factory, could the car have gotten sprayed a 911 color or similar, despite the paint code? Almost looks like Ice Green Metallic in the pic

Thanks for the help guys. A while ago I also thought the original color was Ice green Mettalic, but never found a code for that color (at least for the 914s). I stumbled across a 912 website that has a color catalogue for MY 1976 in which Ice Green Metallic (according to them, also known as Silver Green Diamond Mettalic) was a standard color. Was this color available for the 914s? My father guaranteed me that, when he bought the car, the color was original from factory.
By the way, here is the link to the 912 website where I found the catalogue: http://www.912registry.org/restore/pcode.htm

It wasn't a 914 color option from the factory, though it was an optional color on the 911's at the time.

Perhaps the car was painted Ice Green Metallic from the factory as a special order- though it's odd that the paint code does not come up as 98 or 99 for a custom order color on the plate. My only guess as to that was if the request for the color came in after the plate had been engraved? Seems possible since 914's didn't have the care going into them that the 911 did, and a mistake like this could go undetected.

Is there any way you could get in touch with Porsche and ask for a COA using the vin? That would have the original color listed on the certificate

That is exactly what I will have to do. I will go to my local Porsche Dealer so they can decode my car's VIN, as soon as I can. But first, I will try and check if the color plack is original or not (maybe it was changed when the car was repainted)

I didn't think of that- that may be the case. Usually only a full tear-down and restoration would require removal of the plate though. I'm in the middle of mine- took the car completely apart for it- but I left the plate on and masked it for paint.
