Default 914 seatbelt smudge/sludge

My drivers side seatbelt always seems to leave a smudge on my shirt or jacket at my lower abdomen. I have tried a whole lot of cleaners on the belt but nothing seems to work at all.
I bought some Porsche seatbelt covers which are little things that attach via velcro, but as they move around, I still get smudged. (I am using two of them).
It's the good ole' retractable belt from a 1974. I saw one on ebay for appx $150, but that seems like a totally stupid idea. $150 will buy a lot of dry cleaning!

The dirt does not wash out easily from my clothes, so I am wondering if anyone else out there has ideas, or things that have worked for them.

Thanks

John H

Seems an odd issue- I've never had that problem with my '73. I think there are instructions on the tag of the seatbelts as to how to wash them. Don't quote me on it but I believe it says scrubbing with mild detergent and water is the best way.

I just ordered new belts from seatbelt planet; I hope I didn't create a new issue in doing so

I used seatbelt planet to redo the belts in my '73- used the OEM mechanism for the new red belts. Happy with result and would recommend them if you want new belts.
