I had a 73 2.0 in high school. Man I miss that car. I put big jugs on it and it was a 2.2. Had a hell of a time with head temperature though...

Speaking of sickness, I spent the better part of last Saturday waxing the Golf R, taking off all the wheels and cleaning and waxing them along with the brake calipers... then since that looked so good, I decided to do the wheels and calipers on the wife's TTS roadster... the GT3 is next, but the centerlocks require a little more work with those special torque wrenches...
Sometimes I think it would be nice to be able to just drive a car and park it anywhere, but I just can't!

And I thought that I was cool because I cleaned the inside of the windshield on my F 150!

Permit me an observation. The more parts that I hang on the engine, the worse it looks! Anyway, engine tin next, and then the dreaded job of pushing the car outside, digging out the old body to engine seals, and cleaning the engine bay.

You're not running the air flaps?

Nope! Our climate is so warm that I don't want to risk a failed thermostat not opening the flaps on a 100 F day. About the coolest weather that I will ever drive the car in will be about 50 F, and, by habit, I always drive gently when the car is cold. I took the flaps out of the blue '73 2.0 shown in an earlier post, drove that car for a few years in SoCal, then sold the car to a guy in NY. It's still back there, plugging along (no winters), and has never had a problem.

The flaps in my 1.8L engine were so screwed up that the flap above the cooler was lying on the cooler, the activating wire was not connected correctly, the second flap was cocked to one side, and the entire system was not functional!

Oh, I also found a thick layer of crud on the cooler, and the bolt holes for the cooler support were stripped out, and the support was missing!

BTW; I always drive far enough, after start-up, to avoid cold-running condensation.

Jeeeze. I thought the engine tin would be easy. Instead, I got a Chinese Jigsaw puzzle! About half the pieces were bent to fit, or to not fit; I'm not sure. I had to take the fan/fan housing back off in order to figure it all out - it looked like all of the tin had been assembled in the wrong order and then forced into position. I wondered why so many screws were missing/wrong size, etc. Three hours later...

I've always done all of the tin before the fan housing or any of the injection stuff. You're a brave man.

I had forgotten the fan housing trick! At least until I pulled out the tin, and found that they were badly bent because some moron installed them with a hammer and big pliers, with the housing installed, last time around. Fortunately I already had the fan/housing off for cleaning, re-sealing work (oil cooler, fan hub), etc., and those parts were already nice and clean. Once the housing was back off, I could figure out how to bend the tin pieces so they looked original again. Another mess cleaned up!

Only that I took a long-overdue vacation in October, so not much progress. I got under the car, sitting on a creeper, and removed the last bits of the engine bay to engine tin seals. What a filthy, miserable job. That's done, and I have the new seals ready to install. I couldn't get the pulley off the old alternator, so I had to find a replacement pulley, which I have. With luck I'll be able to install the intake runners and finish the alternator install tomorrow. If it goes smooth I'll also try to install the engine tin seals.
