Default Considering a 914

Hey everyone. There is a 914 for sale, a couple hours away from where i live. I currently have a 81 928, but have always liked the look of a 914. Anyways the owner of the car now said this car has been sitting in his shed for a couple years. He is currently asking 1900.00 for it. Says it doesn't run, but just waiting for his email to tell me what he thinks is wrong with it. Can you guys take a look at some pics and let me know if it might be worth the effort. We are thinking of doing the 914ev to it, but would like to get it running as a driver first.

Owner says its a 74.

From the pics can you guys tell what type of 914 etc, factory motor etc..

Thx for your time
Gord

First, it isn't a '74 as they didn't make a 1.7 in '74 only in '73. Also, there rear bumper is from a '73 as well. Which is honestly the best year anyway. Looking at it quickly as none of the pictures show the hell holes on the car it is hard to give an opinion. The fact that the engine is not working is not a big concern if the body is good. I have a feeling the body isn't very good looking at the car quickly. I probably would pass, but it can't hurt to go look at it.

Thx Jay.
May I ask how you can tell it has a 1.7 from the pic? Or is it is because your sure it's a 73, and thats all they had? Please bear with me as 914's are new to me

Ooops sorry just reread your post. So they didnt make a 1.7 in 74, so then sounds like it should be a 914/6 then? Correct?

914/6? Uh, no. "Sixes" have 5-bolt wheels. The above car is probably a '73 1.7, as indicated by Jay and the rear "1.7" badge on the car (and 1.7 means 4-cylinder engine). Good wheels, chrome bumpers and driving lights. Might be a steal, but the rust on the top of each rear quarter panel indicate that worse is possible in the hard to see places. If it doesn't run because it needs trigger points, that would be a steal. If it doesn't run because the gas tank is full of rust and the engine blew, that's quite another deal.

Can you get engine compartment pics? How about interior?

1974 motors were either 1.8 or 2.0 liters. ALL 4 cylinders.

This one has a small 1.7 badge on the back of the car.. so, if accurate, would make it a '73 or older.

The rear bumper has no rubber "****".. this was true of pre 1974 models as well. but notice, the front bumper does have the rubber "****".. so ONE of these is wrong.

If its a '74, the VIN would start 474xxxxxxx From this, a '73 would begin 473xxxxxx

Look at the bottom of the B pillar where the black vynil meets the orange paint. Looks like heavy rust, even a whole on the passenger side.

The car has mudflaps (that look well used). This car WILL HAVE RUST all over it. If you remove, or look under, the black metal rocker panels (that black panel runs from fender to fender, under the door). Typically, the jack port /hole, traps LOTS of road debry and moisture.. same with the rocker panel itself.. leading to rust.

The other rust areas.. Under the battery tray (located in the engine compartment). This area is also called the "hell whole"... you can guess why.

Floorpans, trunks, under weatherstripping, are some other places to look for rust.

Hi Guys.
Thanks for the quick responses.
Talked to owner tonight via phone. He bought the car non running 2 yrs ago.He bought it as a project, but didn't even know where to turn the motor to see if it was seized etc. He hasn't even looked at it since buying pretty much. He is going to send me the vin tonight or tomorrow, as he was on the road and didn't have it with him. He says it is a 1.7, he is pretty sure ( the vin will verify). Anyways will go take a look see maybe this weekend, and will post some interior and some pics from all over the body, and under. Think might have the price lower than the 1900 he is asking, but will see. 914's are very rare up in my neck of the woods.

no rear bumperettes- '73. sail panels don't look good... love the side protectors- if you buy it, can I have those??? (sorry, couldn't resist)

If those are real Fuchs, they're worth something on their own... actually I'd be more interested in the pickup behind it...

Some interior pics... he has now dropped the price to 1700.00....

Looks to be some "surface rust". but trunk etc looks not to bad, unless it was a respray....

I've seen worse!

Remember, the part of the trunk floor that rusts is below the taillights at the rear of the trunk (now covered with carpet). The battery area looks rough, but you never know for sure until you start scraping.

Can you see under the ends of the rocker covers to check for rust perforations?

Too bad that the engine is an unknown. Which means so are the transmission and clutch.

Well guys took the trip to check er out. Guy left it sitting on a dirt floor quansit for 6 yrs. YIKES!! Interior is mint, but there is rust everywhere. Under the battery is rusted out, big hole there. Behind rocker panels, there is almost nothing left of the frame so rusted out. Only thing going for it is the interior which looks 1000 times better than my 928. Told him most i'd give him is 700.00, maybe could sell some of the parts. Who needs anything? lol

He still thinks he will get 1700 for it, but said if it doesn't sell in a month call me.
Thanks for your opinions on the car, that's why this site is the best on the net.
Cheers
Gord
