Looking at 912 tomorrow
Folks,
Anything specific to the 912 to look for? Going to look at a SWB 912 tomorrow and might buy it on the spot if everything checks out. But what should I look for??
Not familiar with the 4 cylinder cars. I did search and found a few comments on the generator. Again, looking for stuff that is specific to the 912. I am looking at engine bay photos to check against the car that I am looking at... to try to identify missing/modified parts from a stock one...
I will get under the car to look at the front pan, brakes, under carriage condition, etc. That is common to all 911/912... check for rust in the windshield corners, rear shelve, rear window corners, sills, etc.
Wish me luck. Really looking forward to owning a long nose.

Found this list on another forum:
+1 on Steve. Those are the biggest areas to look at. I received this from someone a few years back....

NOTES
Check everything: chassis, body (especially the rocker panels under the doors). Also a #2 Philips head screwdriver: tap panels with the handle as fiberglass and metal have distinctive sounds. If a chassis panel sounds 'thin' (again distinctive), 'poke' it with the blade. A thin, rusty panel is easily penetrated. Suspension pan, chassis areas under rear torsion bar outer mounts, 'package shelf' and rear seat pans are subject to rust from the interior side.
Take a good magnet to test areas for bondo, a thin pointed screwdriver to check for rusted areas, LED light, camera, meter...

Hi Wachuko, I think you should check out 912bbs.org more action going on there. I notice one member who is pretty active in answering question is Bob Harriman. Good luck...

Got it today... needs work but looks like a nice project. All the trim/parts are in there, nothing missing... just a few rusted out areas, nothing structural: floorpan under driver feet (not under pedals, between pedals and seat), under rear passenger seat, corners of windshield (I can see bubbles, and we all know these are prone areas anyway...)and right corner rear glass.. I can see rust from the engine bay looking at the area... needs a complete respray, looks like it is painted in red primer but not sure if it is primer or just the old paint job gone bad...
I just got home with it... hell of a drive from where it was...short drive, not far... but everything that could go wrong, did... To the point where it almost got out of the trailer anyway... it is home and parked safely and in one piece in front of the garage...
A few photos when I went to pick it up... I will post more of the bad and the ugly when I start cleaning everything.

Ended up paying US$8,200.00 for it.
Car is finally parked in my driveway...
A few photos of the ugly... making a list of stuff that needs attention...
1. Paint. It is beyond recovery. To the point that I thought it was painted red oxide... nope, it is the paint job that is past its prime... complete respray will be required.
2. Interior needs redoing. All trim bits and pieces are there... just needs new paneling to recover in new leather or vinyl...
3. Rust... see photos... driver floorboard, rear passenger bucket, bottom corners of windshield and rear window, passenger side, lower sill. And there is a spot of rust in one of the bumpers (red circled spot in the photo).
Driver floorboard:
Rear passenger bucket seat area:
Lower corners in front and rear glass frame...
Looking from inside the engine bay to the corners of the rear glass area:
Passenger side sill:
Bumper:
4. Engine... need to go over with photos of other similar engines to see what is missing or hacked. Seems to be almost all there. I have the PET and will check diagrams and part numbers. First order of things is to clean it up well and then look again to see condition. Engine runs, but a rebuild is also in order.
5. Exhaust system looks fine, just needs to be ceramic coated to bring it to looking like new.
6. I need to drive it (owner had different seats and the kept and original seats should be here on Saturday), but looks like shocks are needed all around.
I will get it up on the lift and inspect the rest... I want it to be excellent mechanically so that I can drive it while I attend to the metal work. Paint will be the last thing on the list.... I don't mind driving it around in different shades of primer

Congrats...
I have a question, you paid $8200, why didn't you get a well sorted one for $20K+?
I mean the restoration cost will be $$$, I understand you have done many projects before, so I'd like to know your reasoning.

Part of my therapy is fixing stuff... I need something to keep me busy in the garage and away from investing money on booze and hookers. Plus my wife is happy as she opens the garage door and sees me there every night and weekend...

A few more photos...
Toolkit:
Door panels need work as well...
So those the steering wheel center cover. All guages work but could use restoration... not sure cleaning alone will bring the back to looking like new.
I forgot to take the original radio with me... will do so when I go get the seats this Saturday
Car has a Seine Systems gate shift kit... but original shifter was included
This only needs to be cleaned and polished... that was just cleaning it with my hand for the photo...
Rear seats
Removed the door panel to check the internals... all fine. Also took the time to fix the door handle as you could not open the door from the outside. Simple fix as it was that the push button was outside of the mechanisim. Back in place and it is woking now.
