Introductions are in order...

Let us know how the roll bar goes in. I had to modify my plates before they were welded to the chassis because they and the bar were too wide to fit between the side walls of the chassis. Then I had to reupholster my interior side panels to get by the bar. It's a TRE roll bar.
The plate and bar mount both had to be cut where the line is on the chassis plate which eliminated one anchor. I had to modify my vinyl to get around the bar. After that ordeal, it came out great. Just didn't like fabricating things to get it to install.

Unfortunately, I got busy and didn't have time to run to the DMV before tonight's storm. So the car is going to sit out under a cover through another 12" dump. Hopefully I can get it to the shop next week.
Ultra, I suspect I am going to have to do the same thing. The bar is bolted in, and the weld-in plates do appear to be pretty tight. I'll take a closer look at it once it is relocated.
Regards,
Matt

Remove rear seats. Remove vinyl siding. Pull the carpet up. Wire wheel the spot for the plates on the chassis to bare metal. Attach the bar loosely to the plates and put in the car with the rear bars attached to seat anchors. Get your location for the plates then tack weld the plates to the chassis with the bar attached. Then remove the bar. Finish welding the plate. Spray undercoating onto the plate and chassis where there is exposed bare metal with screws in it so the undercoating does not get into threaded holes. I then had to use new screw or you'll have to clean the undercoating off of the ones sprayed on since they will be exposed. Pull out screws and lay carpet back down. Cut holes into the carpet at the female locations of the plate. Reattach the bar with the carpet between the chassis plate and bar plate and wala. I'm sure you knew all that but what the hell. I had to have somebody explain it all to me on the ESR (Early911SRegistry). Good luck. Send me PM if you have any questions. By the way, I removed my entire interior, seats and all and then was able to clean all the dust from all the hard to get to areas, re-powder coat the seat rails and clean all the vinyl. The vinyl siding will need to be fabricated and reupholstered with the existing vinyl to get by the bar. Compare your siding shape to the picture I posted above and you'll know what I mean.

I had a really solid '80 3.0l just dropped in my lap yesterday. It is tempting to put it in this car because it is easier and I am inherently lazy. However I think the right place for it is in one of my 914s...

Bump. Car is back on the road with a set of '76 pedals in it. Got some new shoes:
Going to go back to working on the bar over the holiday weekend. I'm pretty sure I can fit it without cutting if I pull the side vinyl.

Are you building it out as a dedicated racecar or a street-legal track car (it sounds like the latter)? It would be good to have another 912 on the circuit around here. Here's a photo Dave Philip took of me breaking out of the pack at the RMVR race at HPR last weekend.

Sorry Rich, not a racecar. And with a recent addition to my stable, the amount of time it spends as track toy is probably going to be minimal. Going to be more of a sport purposes street rod than anything else.
Getting retro looking aftermarket sport seats with 4pt harnesses. Going to go through the whole suspension, brakes, bushings, etc. 5spd gearbox swap along with probably installing a type IV. Gonna be a renegade car for a few years and my run around summer daily driver.

Thanks Dino. I wanted to drive it the last two days, but 100 degrees with no AC just doesn't cut it.
I'm still trying to get seats for it. The vendor I contacted hasn't responded to my inquiries. Going to have to find someone else to buy my seats from. For those who don't want to pay the premium for real Recaros or GTS Classics, this is what I have found that I think will fit my purposes:

I'm looking at the Classic CS at about $500 a seat.
