'79 930 Turbo
I may have the opportunity to see a '79 930 Turbo in guard red with slightly less than 20k miles. I would like to know what is the price range I should be expecting (assuming it's in great conditions)? From our conversation, it seemed to be ~$105,000USD, to me it seems on the low side. What do you think?
I will try to follow the various tips found on the forum (paper work, certificate, # of owners, etc.), but is there anything in particular for the year '79 I should be aware?
Thank you,
Alex

Very difficult to establish value on the vast majority of cars at this price level without a good visual and PPI.
Glad to hear you're looking at an early 3.3 Turbo.
Need to know if this is a euro or north american 930. There's tons of info here and in other sources.
As "for anything in particular for the year '79 I should be aware";
- The 1st thing I would establish is the mileage. A car with less than 20,000 miles should look like a new car.
- Secondly, please supply pictures or let us know the VIN. The VIN can tell us a lot.
For example, there were 2 separate builds of the North American '79 Model Year, Type 1 was built during the normal '79 production, while Type 2 was built alongside all other 1980 production. Each had items particular to the time (dependent on supply quantities).

Yes, there is something quite beautiful about the an early Turbo! I actually received the website URL: http://www.automobilesetcetera.ca/en...built/7923634/
From there I googled the VIN and this website came up: https://www.switchcars.com/cars-for-...rsche-930-1979
Another website from the same owner shows the car was valued in 2015 at $200k CAD (and now $135kCAD): http://education5u.blogspot.ca/2015/...rbo-coupe.html
Not sure what to think about the car anymore.

http://www.automobilesetcetera.ca/en...built/7923634/ lists 9309800914 as "1 of 806 built" I'm not sure how that statistic was derived.
9309800914 is a Type 2 (1980 production period) 1979 Model Year North American 930. It is 1 of about 400 from that run.
There were a total of 1190 (Type 1 and 2) 1979 Model Year North American 930's built.
The early 930's are special cars with special histories. Good luck with your hunt.

For VIN 9309800914, the 4th digit (9) tells us that this is a ''79 Model Year 930. The 5th digit (8) notes this is a NA (North American delivery) 930. The last 4 digits (0914) are the VIN sequence identifiers. All 930 VINS from 1975 thru 1979 were 10 digits and Porsche started all production VIN sequences at 0011. So for 0914, it was actually the 904th VIN sequence for its group and, similarly, because of this, even though the last VIN identified for this group is 9309801200, there were actually a total of 1190 production NA 1979 MY 930's produced.
All Porsches at this time began manufacturing life with sequential "tub" numbers as an internal way to identify vechicles as orders were "stacked" at the plant for a given (normal) Model Year production. It is my understanding that ALL 911 and 930 Coupes, regardless of final delivery destination, received a tub number when the paperwork at the plant started. When the 1979 Model Year 911 SC and 930 3.3 Coupes began production in 8/78 all were identified as 1979 MY. There are the Type 1's.
Porsche decided the 1979 was the last MY the 930 was to be delivered in North America due to increasing Federal Regulations. Because the 930 was such a hot commodity in North America, Porsche continued to import approximately 400 additional 1980 tubs, labaled as 1979 MY VINs through the end of '79. These are the Type 2's. Although there is not as distinct a cutoff as there is between the '79/'80 tub numbers, the NA '79 MY Type 2 930's also share part changes that similarly occurred on other 1980 MY Porsches, in particular the NA 911.

Hey Alex i pm'ed you my info, the VIN and car is registered on The 79 Porsche 930 turbo registry Facebook page. Here's a photo of the car noting it's been repainted red. I would advise against cars repainted another color. Casablanca beige is unfortunately a very nice color.. link below..

I think 930 prices right now just depend on the specific car, specific buyer/seller, geography, timing etc. The range seems to be anywhere from $95-200K. And the years/models are all over that range too so theres little consistency.
I think it ultimately comes down to condition. It always does. Miles will be a factor too. But the good cars with a strong paper trail of caring owners spending lots of money to keep it happy will get the most interest. These cars are getting old. Even the '89s are basically early 70's technology. They are dinosaurs. Buyers want to know what they are getting and will be prepared to spend more up front for that peace of mind. The folks buying these cars can tend to do that now as they are collector cars and not just used Porsches.
