Need info about 930 axles
I'm working for a company that is using 930 cv joints for an electric car application. The 930 axles (shafts with splined ends) are not long enough, so we are using some from a sand rail application that uses the same cv joints. The problem is that there is a large amount of slop/play in the spline joint between the axle and cv joint, which results in a noticable backlash and "clunk" with changes in throttle or braking. Apparently, the sand rail guys keep the joint pretty loose due to the huge suspension travel and angular misalignment that their vehicles have, which results in lots of sliding of the axle splines through the cv joints.
My questions (finally, I know) are:
1. Does anyone know if there are any longer axles available that have the same spline dimensions? Perhaps from a 935 or some other wide body Porsche 911-based race car?
2. Is it normal for there to be a lot of slop between the 930 axles and cv joints? It certainly does feel like a "Porsche joint" to me. Like I said, I think the sand rail guys do that on purpose, but we didn't have an actual 930 axle shaft there to compare the relative amount of play.
Sorry for the long and somewhat OT post. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Try the Racing and DE forum. Somebody there has to know a mfg of custom axles.

The 930 CV joints before '86 are thicker and the axles for the early CV's have longer splines. Porsche CV joints are made by Lobro to Porsche's specs which are tighter than BMW and sand rail CV's.
If you get Origonal Porsche CV joints from the dealer, these will be very expensive but they ar the best, made to tighter tolerances of better steel, and will last at least 3 to 4 times as long as the cheap Lobro aftermarket CV's for Porsche.
7 series BMW CV's are the same size but made in looser tolerances than 930 CV's.
The EMPI CV joints for dune buggies you see on ebay are made to the loosest tolerances of all because of the low quality and extreme angles they run.
If those are what you are using on early or late 930 axles thats the problem... they are junk.
