Engine keeps running after turning off the key
The engine sometimes continues to run on my 86 911 Turbo after you cut the key off. I also have noticed that when that happens, if I pull the key out, it will cut off immediately. This is not a "dieseling" problem. It's not knocking and sputtering. It will run just the same as if the key is on. Is it a short in the ignition switch?

I presume that you are aware of the time-delay relay that's an integral part of the 930 ignition system, which is designed to allow the engine to continue running for a few seconds after turning off the ignition switch. It's purpose is to depresssurize the fuel system (ignition spark remains but the fuel pumps are not energized). Are you talking just a matter of seconds (like one to three), or indefinately?
You comment, though, about shen removing the key results in instant stoppage. Hmmm...could indeed be the switch itself.

I believe there is a short run on timer built into your car. Mine does the same thing but it is not dieseling. It was disscussed on the forum a while ago so maybe you can run a search on it. I got an e-mail yesterday about a whole new line up of new wrecks available for pickings. Go here enjoywww.GermanAutoDismantlers.com

Bad relay, or some internal component in the relay (transistor, diode, resistor, capacitor, or such wizzardly stuff). It seems that my car used to run for maybe a half second or so, but now it pretty much just shuts right down. Have never bothered to look into it.

You should ck the ignition wires at the key cylinder. I dont remember the colors but there is probably only one ignition wire. It should only get power when the key is on. It is easy to look under there. If someone knows the color, take a basic test light and with the key off probe it. If it has power, the ignition switch is bad. If it doesn't have power your problem is after that. I have seen iginition switches go bad before.
