Default I need to run car without air filter box???

Has anyone fitted just a round K&N style filter to top of air meter? This would make it so much easier to diagnose engine while running.

Lots of people have done that.
A search here or especially over on the Pelican Parts tech message board would bring up lots I think.

Default K&N

Trying to do that now, K&N # E-3270 is the filter. Been getting some help from some guys on Pelican's BBS about this. I'll post what the final outcome is.

You know, the stock air box does a hell of a job (cleaning and ducting the air) and is engineered to work with the CIS air metering plate. Take this into consideration when choosing some after-market air cleaner you think might work better. Not sure what you want to diagnose tho...

Default I just plan on using to diagnose AAV or WUR problems!!

Will put stock air filter back on when running right. I did cut the metal perforated panel off the new air filter though, that had to have been a little restrictive.

I agree 100%, but I see some guys on Pelican that run their 930 engines (approx 400HP) on dynos with the small aftermarket filter, and they see no loss in HP, and they are way over my stock 300hp. I'm really curious about this.

Default I have never really been a fan of K&N filters!!

They flow more air, but that also means they flow more dirt, I guess that doesn't really account for much considering 930 motors are rebuilt about every 60k or so.

Oh, sorry, I orig suggested K&N because that is what I found that would fit. The guys on Pelican, that put their cars on a dyno are just using generic small round filters that will fit. I was not implying the performance diff between K&N and stock, but just any generic round filter that will replace the factory housing.

I ordered the Mr. Gasket set up from Summit racing, which is a paper filter. it comes with everything you need (filter, Chrome top, and bottom), and all you have to do is drill 2 holes in the top. Not sure how well it will fit till UPS gets here.

I used the "Top" from the Mr Gasket #1491, and a K&N filter #E-3270. Ordered the K&N and bought the MR G locally. The Mr G "Top" fits perfect on the K&N, and the bottom of the K&N sits right on the throttle flange. Did have to put a small "notch" in the side of the filter to clear the mixture "screw".

I used Mr. Gasket #1485 and did have to notch the bottom plate a bit, but worked out fine.

Did not use a bottom plate, the filter itself fit right on the base of the intake rubber seal ring. I had to make a small notch in the filter itself.

Actually, The 1485 is a better solution then the 1491, as the 1485 filter is 2.5 inches tall and the 1491 filter is 1.5, which may be to short to provide proper air flow. The only think I don't like about either is the hole in the center that you have to plug!

The hole in the middle is the downside, I will probably just pick up a rubber washer from the auto parts store and use a bolt and nut
