Wheel bearing issue?
Hi all,
Just spent a fantastic weekend at Caffeine and Octane at the Beach...
On the highway I started to notice a new whirling noise that seemed to come from my drivers side front wheel. I would start at around 75mph and raise in pitch as speed increased. It's not engine based but seemed to occur based on the rotation speed of the wheel.
I don't have any experience with this type of 'symptom' and it's just a wild guess of mine that it could be that front wheel bearing going bad.
Am I on the right track or way off base? Anyone with similar experiences and solutions...? your help is greatly appreciate.
thanks!
Jim

I do mine once a year, but I do take it on track a few times each season. This is one of those maintenance items that's easy to do, but really blows when they go sideways on you...

Do all other "I don't know when" maint. items also - fuel hoses, rubber brake hoses (use new rubber ones from the dealer), etc.
The important things to do are the ones that will kill you, 2nd place are the ones that will destroy part of the car.
- then, while doing the bearings, see if a dust shield is rubbing

That is a gross looking wheel bearing, wow.
I'll tell you when it gets to be a tough call - when you don't remember which brand of bearing you used and don't know what type of bearing race is in there. I usually pound out the races and just replace them at that point.
Or when your pads need replacing and the rotors have a lip. Do you cut them down, buy new rotors, buy cheapo pads and say wtf they are not the high tone ones? This is also when I just buy all new rotors, pads, etc.

I've done front wheel bearing three times on Porsches. Much easier that it would appear at first. Totally pays for the HF press shown in rusnak's link.
The real killer is that they often fail without making a sound. You also lose your brake pads and rotors in the deal if they go loose to long.

Thanks guys. I think I'll just go ahead and replace the bearings races. Are there kits available that will provide me with everything I'll need?

EDIT: I think I roasted you over a typo. Certainly you meant to type "bearings & races"...my bad.
