Value thoughts on a 76 911S?
Hi Rennlist,
First post after a couple of years of lurking. I'm actively considering a friend to friend sale of a 76 911S. Silver with black interior, sunroof, no a/c. 85K on the odo and the original 2.7 was just fully rebuild by the local Porsche dealer (of all places) last winter and the seats were also just reupholstered in an OE quality leather. Car presents really well but is a driver, no garage queen. No rust at all. Fuchs, classic three spoke wheel, chrome trim. Really just a nice clean unmolested example of a mid years 911 that lives outside under a car cover is the summer. Hagarty pegs a #3 at about 17K and a #2 at about $32K. I realize pictures help the discussion but I'm not got any at the moment. The car is in winter storage. Thoughts on price?

A really nice 911 is a #3 car.
#2 is a show car.
#1 is a car we seldom see. It's the perfect car that resides in a climate controlled garage.

Working on pics at the moment. I agree that a #2 is a really special car, and this is not a #2, maybe barely a #3. Trouble is with $10-15K in recent rebuilds, maintenance, and the bubble, the seller has big $$ thoughts. While I like the idea of buying in the neighborhood as a life long 911 enthusiast, I know what I want, I am comfortable with risk, but ultimately this car is not an exact match for me, close but not exact. Therefore I'm unwilling to shoot the moon on price. My gut is this is a $20-25K car (which is a premium due to recent quality sorting) but I think he believes it to be a $35K+ car.
I really want that analog car for the stable. The middies certainly fill the bill and this is a pretty well sorted version. All of the engine issues typical of the 2.7 have been addresses with the full rebuild and we live in a non-smog state.

S means little or nothing for that year
2.7L can be trouble esp. if it had thermal reactors - did it? specify what fully rebuilt means
a nice car in good maint. shape is always worth something (unless it has sugar scoops)

One thing to look for is an oil cooler in the right front wheel well, and an 11-blade fan on the engine. I think in 1976 external oil coolers were still optional, and the engine came with a 5-blade fan.
Budget about $500 for the fan upgrade, and probably at least $1,500 to add the oil cooler, assuming you can do the work yourself. Both important for long life of the 2.7.

Definitely more than $20k. Probably less than $35k. I think high 20s might be a fair price.

Three Wheelin'
You looking at easily a $70k car! At least these clowns think so.

Probably worth around $30k by your description (rebuild, no rust, interior refresh...)

That car is looks very nice and my first reaction was that it could be worth $70k. It's a pity that they didn't repaint the engine bay to match the exterior. Also there is a clear need for some replaced or restored hardware, for example, the engine hood latch. Makes me wonder how much of an engine refresh they really did.

From one picture, this looks nice. Paint and trim look great, and are very expensive to do right. If this car speaks to you, I would not hesitate. IF you pass, send me a pm with the sellers contact info. Thanks - Jason

Color change. Fail.
