Default My 1986 3.2 Carrera Timeline

Hello! I'd like to use this thread to introduce my "new" 1986 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera. I'll account for ongoing maintenance, projects, and adventures with the car here too.

Vehicle info:
-1986 911 3.2 Carrera Coupe with Turbo-look widebody
-Meteor Gray Metallic (L961) exterior
-Black leather/leatherette (LT) interior
-68,978 miles as of delivery date 10/24/16
-Aftermarket (all steel) widebody conversion with 930 Slantnose rear quarters and side sills
-16" Rebel S Racing custom 3-piece Fuchs wheels (16x8.5 et12.7 and 16x10 et-9) wrapped in Toyo Proxy R888s (spring/summer)
-16" MSW/OZ Ceres mesh wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenzas (fall/winter)
-Fabspeed Motorsport muffler bypass pipe (installed 3/23/17)
-Full paint correction and Optimum Gloss Coat (applied 4/2/17)
-Rennline black door sills (installed 6/11/17)
-Momo Mario Andretti steering wheel (installed 7/9/17)
-Focus 9 Technology solid-state pump-prime DME relay (installed 8/5/17)
-Wevo PSJ shift coupler (installed 9/4/17)

Ownership history:
I am the 4th owner. The car spent its early years in Indiana - the first two owners were both based in Muncie according to records. The 2nd owner moved to Florida in '94 and the car was there until 3rd owner got her in 2000. The 3rd owner was originally in Ft. Wayne, IN. In '08, he moved to Kernersville, NC - where the car stayed until coming back to Ft. Wayne in 2014. I purchased the car sight-unseen on 10/5/16 from a dealer in Grand Rapids, MI - though I had an independent shop with Porsche-specialists do a PPI for me to help gain clarity on condition and issues. Shipper picked up the car on 10/11 and delivered it to me in Pennsylvania on 10/24.

Plans:
My immediate plans are to get the vehicle in top shape mechanically and cosmetically; and do as much of it myself as I'm able to given my resources and knowledge. Other than that, I hope to do little projects to make the car my own. With any luck, this car will stay in my family forever and will give me many many years of enjoyment and will be a part of some great adventures. Cheers!

On to the pictures!

On delivery day, took some time to get familiar with the car and check everything out in person. I knew from the PPI that one of the DS window switches needed to be flipped, so I did that along with taking off the front license plate bracket. Then, after checking all the rubber seals, it was time to wash off all the dust from transport.

Insurance was finalized yesterday, and I registered the vehicle this morning - so she's 100% road legal now. I also applied for a PA Classic tag, which should be arriving in about 3 weeks.

Arranging some time with my mechanic and great friend Kevin W. at Kresge Foreign Cars - a Porsche specialist in Bethlehem, PA for a full rear brake overhaul, all needed fluids, and state inspection. Also ordered a new license plate bulb assembly, as my left rear was toast. Unfortunately the structure of the bumperette itself is rotting away at the bottom screw mounting point... so I need to find some kind of solution. Maybe deleting the bumperettes altogether.

A few more weeks to enjoy the car before long-term winter storage.

-Jeremy

Don't just delete the bumperettes as that involves paint work. Spend the money for replacement.

And your "all stock" statement has peaked my interest. Are we talking "Factory Turbo-Look" M491 W/Spacial Wishes 930S rear quarters on the build sheet? I've only ever seen one in person.

With any luck, this car will stay in my family forever and will give me many many years of enjoyment and will be a part of some great adventures. Cheers!

Jeremy what a beautiful car! I HAVE to see it in person before it goes away for the winter haha. Are you free this weekend perhaps? Or maybe you can cruise up to the PCA track day at NJMP Thunderbolt on 11/5 and 11/6? Either way, very much looking forward to meeting you and you joining the Fabspeed community

I like the idea of the "safety net" of the bumperettes and I don't mind the look of them too much. They are very expensive new from Pelican Parts at $500+ per side (http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/..._pg1.htm#item0). Guess I'm going to have to make one mounting screw work or try to find a used one.

I'm currently working that out with Porsche of America. It does not have the M491 option on the production stickers or 930 brakes, but I read somewhere in my research that some Sonderwunsch cars flew under the radar and that until sometime in '86-'87 all the documented M491 cars had smooth rear quarters. What year was the one you saw, and did it have the M491 option listed?

Hi John. Thanks for the kind words! I'm unfortunately tied up the next few weekends, but my wife has family in Bucks County and we've been looking to move to the area just north of you guys (Bucks/Mont). I'd like to come down to see your operation sometime. I read about your Open House that I regrettably missed a few weeks ago. It was only going to torture me anyway. You guys come highly recommended by a guy named Dave Snyder up in Macungie (not sure if the name rings a bell for you). Looking forward to meeting you as well.

First real road trip today - around 80 miles from home to my mechanic in the Lehigh Valley. The boys at Kresge will be sorting out the rear brakes and getting her inspected next week.

Was a blast to wind her out on the highway a few times and take her through some back road twisty turns as well.

Nope. Garaging it - just not at my current residence.

Thanks man. Different strokes for different folks. I wasn't after a wide body car per se, but I liked the color combo, the overall look of the 930S rear, and low miles.

In other news, I dug through the Pelican Parts classifieds section and picked up an excellent condition used left bumperette for $75 shipped.

It looks like a nice car, but I'd have to believe the special wishes folks would have taken a M491 and added the strakes, meaning you'd have a modded 491. And, there would be some reference in documentation. Its not like widebody conversions were never done after-the-fact. i'd bet that was done by one of the owners along the lime.

You're probably right. I realize it's a very long shot to be uncovered as a Special Wishes car. I've not been able to confirm if the others with this same setup were M491 optioned or not (or if the system was even consistent for the SW cars). Plenty of aftermarket wide body conversions out there, but not any I could find with this look unless you could get your hands on chopped stock 930S rears or cut them out manually. Working with POA to dig deeper. Would clearly be awesome if it is SW, but I'm certainly not counting on it.

The guys at Kresge in Bethlehem got her all sorted out for what she needed to pass inspection. Had an excellent drive afterwards, ending in the dark. Also heard back from my contact at Porsche of America and the car does not have any official traces back to the Special Wishes program, so I've updated my original post accordingly.

She is in storage now through the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend - and then will be tucked away for good through the winter months.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong (guess I really didn't have to request that), but a true M491 would have, in addition to the missing Turbo brakes, Turbo rear control arms, with the wider track. So if your car has pretty thick wheel spacers in the rear (since your offset doesn't look abnormally "deep"), then that would point to a third-party conversion…

Beautiful car nonetheless, hope you enjoy it for a good long time.

And yes, come down to a Schattenbaum track event; our track folks put on a real good show!
