Default What's the cost on a G50 transmission rebuild?

so my transmission is done. It will need to be rebuilt. It is an 89 with 80,000 on it. What should I expect for a good and fair job? I've never had that done on any of my porsches so it is a first for me.

It will be well worth the time to call Steve Weiner at Rennsport Systems.

As a reference..... In 2010, I had the engine/trans out of my '89 for a clutch. While I was in there, I addressed several issues including a few minor issues with the transmission.

As a preemptive measure, I had all the synchros replaced along with a few bearings that were showing wear. All in, the work was $2,500. There are gears and bearings in the trans that are $400-$500 each so a rebuild can get expensive quickly.

What symptoms are you experiencing? That may be a better way to start the query.

No good gearbox mechanic will give you anything but a range before they take it apart and do an autopsy.

That said, labor rates for a rebuild are generally $800-1200. From there it's parts. Expect to spend $3-4k on the job if we are talking just bearings, synchros, and dog teeth and slider hub assemblies. If it has something major wrong it could be double or triple that. A ring and pinion is a $3000 part and adds $500 labor to the job, for example.

Wow done at 80? Mine has 89 on it never opened shifts fantastic.... clutch is going and getting replaced though....

Put it in a cooler, ship it to bill rader or one of the other guys that just does trans.

Matt speaks the truth on costs.

Wow it definitely seems more expensive to fix a g50 than a 915.

Yes. 915 synchros, under $100, G50 nearly $200. 915 sliders around $200, G50 sliders almost $800.

I forgot to mention that I had deep discounts on parts and labor. My total should have been ~$3,500
