VERY interesting, and very cool as well. Never knew, in depth, how galvanization actually worked, thanks!

Kidney Bowl - the reinforcement panel at the back edge of the sill, behind the quarter panel/B-post. This is the later, stronger version freshly welded onto the right inner sill, the outer sill yet to be fitted over the front section.

Only one way to tackle a job like this: one piece at a time. Our fabricator Oggy started work on the right rear corner, replacing the entire inner wing and inner sill with a new factory panels. Don't worry, I have more photos of the left side during the repair process to show what lies beneath.

Late model kidney bowl/jacking point next, fully welding the joints underneath first. This is what it looks like under the outer sill. Note the concertina heater tube (silencer) inside the inner sill to floor cavity.

will you do anything to stiffen the unit body beyond stock?

You mean, apart from welding in full steel panels where there was once iron oxide? ;-)

The kidney bowls shown in the previous photos are the late 3.2 Carrera version which stiffen up the sill to inner quarter section and some subtle seam welding in critical areas. That's all.

Since both inner wings were so badly repaired in the previous "restoration" it was an easy decision to opt for the dual battery box version of the original 2.7RS. With the new right panel in place, all of a sudden the shell is starts to look like a real 911 again.

TRE in Calif. has done a number of things to stiffen the unit bodies on these cars. Also, a guy named Tyson (Schmidt??) has worked on some stiffening for the front part of the shell - IIRC, he was never sure how feasible that is.

Those are the types of things I am curious about. Especially since so much work is being done already.

Rumor has it Tyson was Jack Olsen's secret weapon

Are the panels sourced from Dansk? I saw on Jalopnik that they have reproduced the entire shell

Thanks for taking an interest guys.

The panels are all genuine Porsche. As far as I know, Dansk do not (yet) manufacture a complete bodyshell. The photos from the recent (Automechanica?) show demonstrate the panels they make in a contrasting colour to the 911 shell underneath.

This build was all about the restoration to factory standards of the rotten SC donor so at no time did we or the owner consider further enhancements to further stiffen the shell. That said, you are on the nail that if you are aiming high in the handling stakes shell stiffness should be at the top of the wish list.
