Default Need tire advice for my "new" '74 911

Hello all,
My Cayman needed a friend, so last night I added a 1974 911 to the garage. Couldn't be more excited to join the air cooled gang!

Tires on the car need to be replaced. Wheels are 15x6 and 15x7 Fuchs. Car is currently sitting on ancient 205/60-15s all around, which seems odd. Looking around online, there are not too many tire choice for 15s that would work for the 911. So I'm looking for help with:
* proper stagger for my wheels
* largest tire size (width) that will fit my wheels without rubbing
* best tire to purchase for best summer performance.

This is a nice weather, weekend fun car that will see limited miles and no foul weather. I assuming a stagger is preferred; just not sure of which combinations work best.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

I would go for a square setup. And I doubt different brands of rubber are going to make a big difference given the car's performance envelope. The beauty of 74s is their clean, classy elegance. Big fat tires don't belong, imho.

^ what size/brand are you using on your '74? Are you running a square setup on staggered wheels?

I have cookie cutters though... Running toyo 195/65 R15 on all corners (not out of choice really, that's what came with the car when I bought it).

Haven't found any decent options yet. More choices if I go for a 50 aspect ratio tire; just don't know how that would look

who cares how it looks? the thing is how it feels

Big fat tires = more stick in the corners BUT you lose some of that light, quick steering feel

there is a thread from a few weeks ago listing a bunch of 15" street tires and some race ones also

I have Dumb-lops now and miss my S03s

for what it's worth this is web page has the tyre recomendations from Porsche http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page...-porsche-tyres

Porsche currently say the Cinturato CN36 and give it the N4 homologation http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page...o-cn36-n4.html front and http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page...o-cn36-n4.html rear.

it won't handle as well when over tyred

and then if you can read German i suppose there is also this

those are 16"

the 15" Cinturato CN36 will not give modern performance AFAIK, tho I expect you'd get the perfromance of the 1970s

I have a 1987 Carrera with 7&8"x15" wheels without breaking the bank I just put a pair of these the rear from Discount Tire. They are made by Falken Tire Parent company. I only have driven around town on them so I don't have a good review of them yet !!

Google Bastards... When I googled it I used 15. I just clicked the result and pasted the link.

I have the 15's are on my car, but they aren't made anymore. That search result suggested to me DT still had some stock on clearance. Sorry for the oversight.

I think the thing to do is for all of us to write to Bridgestone HQ and beg for a 15" S05....

No - That is completely wrong!

They give better performance than a modern tyre on a classic car.

And yes it is also better than a 70's tyre also.

And actually they better performance than a lot of modern tyres on modern cars. they scored 2+ out of 5. that is the 3rd best possible score out of 13 possibilities. It is like scoring 77% out of the possible 100% that i don't believe any tyre could actually score

They do give a modern performance that is considerably better than a lot of modern tyres. that is exactly what that article is showing. That is a modern tyre test with modern scores. it is not just compared to comparative tyres, those scores are 1-5 for specific parts of performance. so when the CN36 scores a 1 for Trockenheit Bremsen (which means dry braking) that means that the CN36 has perfect performance at braking in the dry, meaning nothing is better, be it old or new. and when the CN36 scores on balance 2+ for dry and wet that means there are only -1 & 1 that could be better out of anything new or old.

it has got nothing to do with the age of the tyres the CN36 scores +2 an excellent score weather you pit it against a modern tyre or a old one. and if you had put a modern tyre on this car it would not have scored so highly on the cornering. The CN36 are the best tyres for these cars; that is why Porsche recommend them on their fitment guide (which i have put on my web site http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page...-porsche-tyres ) an d that is also why Porsche have homolgated them with an N4.

http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page...cinturato-cn36 are the best road tyres for '70s Porsche's through till 1986. I have been saying it, but it is difficult to believe me, because i have a vested interest. Most people assume my vested interest is the fast buck. However my vested interest is; that i want to encourage customers to buy the best tyre for their car; because after you have forgotten your credit card bill, you still have the best tyres, and therefore handle beautifully, and hopefully you will remember that is was Longstone that helped you make the right decision. i know no one wants to believe that, people are always suspicious of commercial ventures, but i'm in it for the long hall not just the fast buck. I'm an enthusiast before a tyre dealer and i like a car to drive as well as possible.

To back up the opinion of this fascist bully boy, money grabbing, dirty thieving robbing tyre company, we do have a completely independent German classic car magazine who have taken these tyres and gone to an independent tyre testing organisation who have tested the tyres and come back with the results of 2+ out of 5 .

Then if you still don't believe the fascist bully boy, money grabbing, dirty thieving robbing tyre company & you don't believe the independent tyre test done by an independent magazine then maybe you might believe Porsche themselves, with their N4 mark they say the CN36 is the best tyre for these cars and they back it up with the fitment guide on my Classic Porsche tyres page.
