Default SSI versus plain steel heat exchangers

I'm restoring a '69 911T, and am interested in folks' thoughts about replacing the rusted out heat exchangers with SSI versus regular steel. I can get the SSI for ~$1500 per set, versus ~$1000 for the steel. The restored T won't be a DD, and rust is not a big problem here in CO. On the one hand, it seems to me I won't get any real benefit from the SSI and there are better places in the resto to spend $500 (such as on minty arm rests), whereas on the other hand $500 isn't that much in the grand scheme of things. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

RIch

Go for the SSI heat exchangers. My 1978 911SC got a set in the late 80s or early 90s (I would have to check my invoices), and they are still beautiful and functional. Mild steel heat exchangers will rust from the inside out, giving one pin holes, which will grow (ask me how I know, and the car in question has never been in either snow, or ice, coupled with road salt).

SSI's are a thing of beauty. I almost wanted to hang mine on the wall as art. Mine are now more than 10yrs old and still look new.

If the SS weigh less too then its a no brainer.

I've had mine since they started making them. Worth the money.

Rich,

The main reason to ditch your original heat exchangers is for safety reasons. Those OEM ones likely have pin holes in the tubes which puts carbon monoxide in the cabin when the lever is pulled up.

This is a VERY serious issue which can easily kill you and why we usually replace those old ones with SSI's.
