aircooled 911 - under 20k? A few years to late?
hey guys,
I'm from Germany and I'm planning to buy an air cooled Porsche 911 to build something similar to those of Rockabilly-Jay (https://www.instagram.com/rockabilly_jay/) / enthusiasts-apparel (http://instagram.com/enthusiast_apparel) and roughexample (https://www.instagram.com/roughexample/) as a daily ... I ask this in your forum, because here in Germany we don't have this "outlaw-movement" like the "r-gruppe" ... There are more classic Porsche-guys in the states than in the motherland Germany
The plan for now:
* Find a cheap example that's running with some effort (not a total engine rebuild or all rusty body... ) - no history needed, can be heavily modified, bad paint job, many previous owners... whatever
* Overhaul all the technics, new fluids, sealings ... - get it on the street again
* Optics and interior are of no importance - my main focus is to keep it alive and drive it.
* Maybe a complete rebuild in remote future
Big issue: the cost for the whole project should stay under 20k USD. I would like to do the most of the work on my own (except bodywork and things you need special tools I don't have) ...
Do you think it's possible to find a car that fits my imagination without going bankrupt? Optically rugged, technically more or less okaaay. Quite ambitious, I know.
Looking forward to hear your input and ideas,
Greetings from Germany,

Three Wheelin'
Finding a running, no major rust 911 SC or Carrera coupe for under $20k is pretty much impossible these days. If your total budget is under $20k on the vehicle including repairs move on to another car right now.

You might be able to find a roller project car for a little under $20K.
There was an 82 Targa on Pelican that just sold for $18K. It needed wheels, motor assembly, bodywork and the interior was well worn
Have you considered a 914, 944 or Boxster?

For $20000.00 you might find a decent project 1974-1977S, or a 1978-1983SC in canada or the USA.
It will take at least $5000.00 to transport it to Germany plus import tax.
You will need another $20000.00 for mechanical rebuild and parts.
$20000.00 is the wrong number for a budget unless buying a 996.

Been through this...
First, set your end-game budget... how much are you prepared to spend on the completed project?
Second, the market for Air-cooled 911 is global and extremely efficient... not many "barn-finds" left... you are not going to scoop the pros.
Third... just how skilled are you at automotive restoration... basically, you'll pay in excess of $100USD/hr for skilled labor.
Finally, what do you want to end up with?
- A nice fun weekend driver
- A hot-rod
- A concours-level show car?
This will determine your budget.

My friend here in south florida just sold a guards red 1975 2.7S for about 21k. The car was running well, had working cool AC (incredibly), Steel turbo flared fenders, boxster brakes, and even a center mounted oil cooler which is nice on those cars.
The paint job was bad, and the interior all cracked, and extremely musty as as it was sitting in a barn for many years. The engine was also leaking oil from god knows where, it also didn't have Carrera chain tensioners, but did have an upgraded fan and no thermal reactors.
My point is, there still is a very few you may be able to find. But you have to be quick on your toes these days..

My comp is the '80 Weissach I've got sitting in the back yard for nearly 4 years now. Yes, salvage title--twice. (First, on a theft recovery, where post-repair and another owner, I found it for my then girlfriend in '95. Second, she was rear ended, I bought the salvage, a neighbor repaired it to a decent standard, and I got it back when he tired of it.) I'm just keeping it around in case someone needs a starter point for a Spec 911. I have a hard time thinking the car, which is whole, and could immediately be put back on the road, is worth anything near $20K.

I wonder why that yellow 911 only got bids of $21k
OP might be able to find a trashed out 911 for under $20k.
He said he doesn't care about interior or exterior.
Only issue is a ratty probably also has neglected mechanicals also.
