Everyone,

Looking at an '88 911 coupe that has some modifications and upgrades, including an engine bore out, headers, and some suspension work. Curious on thoughts on effect on valuation to a bore out, if it detracts or not, and either way, what %.

The valuation depends on specifically what was done and who did the work.

As a rule of thumb, ANY modifications from factory original spec for your model will be penalized.
I speak from experience.

I am not an expert, but headers and suspension work could be taken back to stock setup which might help the value.
I would also think it depends if the body and interior are original that would still provide you a good opportunity for higher value even with other mods.

The '88 has the G50 trans which is very desirable so you might be sitting on a pretty valuable Porsche either way.

I'm with Steve on this. As a rule modded cars are valued on desirability/popularity of mod & amount of $$$ spent, flip-side is that you will end up with a smaller market when it comes to resale so you might have to sit on it for a while till the right customer pops along. As an example if you find an 88 roadie with an engine circa 280 hp (done with the right parts and at the right hands) for anything remotely near stock 88 money I'll snap it off your hands.

While most want these cars bone stock, there are those of us who like something that's been tastefully modded and had HP enhancements that are done correctly. I agree that most changes hurt value, but there's an a$$ for every seat.

Original is always the best. Any modification from original will shrink the market and lower try value of the car.

The basic rule here is that any modification should be reversible. Now, on the other hand my 1973.5 had the FI ripped out before bought the car. That one basic fact has let me play with the car.



On the other hand the car that won the PCA preservation award this past year had a replacement front pan. So much for what the PCA thinks of preservation.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, looks like mods value really is "in the eye of the beholder". This particular '88 911 seems well cared for but you never know. I appreciate modern updates but having not overseen it myself am not too trusting. Will let you know what transpires.
