SSIs into G series with a Sportomatic?
Has anyone done this?
I'm trying to fit these up into a friends car and there's interference between them and the Sporto. Those crazy pipes from the left hand side of the engine to the oil tank.
Any info on how this has been overcome by someone who's done it?
Cheers,
Frank

Hi Frank,
Remember now, SSI's are simply an exact reproduction of the factory heat exchangers used on the G-series until '75 and SPM's did not use anything different.
'75 & later 911's used a cross-over system with a narrower HE on the left side. Further, the cross-over oil line differed between '74 and later years.
You may need to take a hammer to the left side HE to add a little clearance, but make sure you have the right oil line between the tank and the pump.

Hi Steve,
How have you been?
The left HE seems to fit ok. It's the right one that has the trouble. There's a hard oil line from the rear of the left cam shaft the goes under the gearbox and, I think, to the oil tank. And then from the right side of the gearbox there's a rubber hose that goes to the oil tank.
It's these two lines that interfere with the heater exit on the right hand HE.
We got the two new oil lines to suit the SSIs ( car has the trombone front oil cooler)
I was going to bend the hard line to more follow the new oil line. Then try and get an elbow for where the rubber one comes out of the box to try and move the hose out of the way.

No complaints, and yourself??? Long time, no hear!
Thats a good solution when modification of the HE isn't possible.
Just don't restrict the lines in any way since the SPM requires a lot of oil volume.

Hi Steve,
Yep, I've been super busy building a house for us.
In relation to the SSIs, we bent and re routed the hard line from The pump to the tank.
The return line has a straight fitting into the gearbox and that is what was interfering with the HE.
After a bit of research I found that the line on 74 models had a 12mm banjo fitting into the gearbox. This fits the hose 90 degrees to the later ones and makes it miss the HE.
We are in the process of having the old hose modified to a banjo end.
Cheers,
Frank

G'day Steve,
New hoses made and fitted and seems to be running fine.
Could you please advise on the best oil to go into the Sportomatic Gearbox?
Its a 4 speed. Would Swepco 201 do the job or do Sporto's require something else?
Cheers,
Frank

How about if I come work for you for a little while, that will lighten the load somewhat and then you'll be free'd up enough for a little visit to Oz.
