What questions to ask about this 83 911 Cab?
I have a friend of a friend looking to get rid of his 83 911 Cab. A grey market car with 78k miles. Green with biscuit interior. A/c has been removed. Says it has a funky shift from 5th to 4th. Also, the car is not currently starting due to sitting for a while (garage). Could use a repaint. No rust visible. Leather is intact, but shows wear. No accidents, no rebuilds or big modifications. Such wheels. Sounds doubtful on being able to pull records for it. Shocks look like they are leaking. He says it ran great when he was driving it (of course it was, they all say that, right?) This car has been owned by him for 20 years.
Any advice on the proper questions to ask here?
I can turn a wrench.
I'm not totally up on the market....rough estimates on running vs non running price ranges?
Thanks.

Three Wheelin'
I'm guessing the mileage is a lot higher as it would have come with KM dials as an euro import and swapped to miles so its 75k miles + whatever old dial had registered, besides leather should still be quite good after 75k miles! Given re-paint & gearbox rebuild costs + dampers + sorting engine/fueling/gremlins could all add up way over car value regardless of what you pay for it. There could be some value if its an 83 SC model as they were the first 911 cabs ever produced but I don't know about that as cabs aren't high on list of collectors unless a speedster.
Walk away.

Non Running as you described I would say $10-12k. Sounds like it needs some work. A good top end rebuild on the 3.0 will run you minimum $8k.

'83 was also the last year of the SC model (3.0l very solid engine) ) which might ad value but 911 cab market is definitely much lower than coupe, but for a cab person it could be reverse.
The gearbox might just need new coupler and bushings which are very inexpensive. No AC, who cares.
Drain and replace fuel and oil, change spark plugs...it might surprise you how well that works.
New Shocks, brake pads, maybe heat exchangers, muffler, and you could have a great last model year SC with fairly reasonable investment, which I feel you would definitely recoup in a few years if it was then maintained and cared for properly.
Check for rust in battery tray and fuel filler area as well.
Good luck.

The way you describe it, with the market like it is... 15-17K Spend some time correcting a few things and getting back to running condition... detail it... well worth the effort.

Pete,
I sent you a email through rennlist with my contact info. Thanks!
PO says the the oil feed tensioner has been done as well as a fairly recent (recent in mile, not time) clutch replacement.
The A/c problem was a leak where the line connected to the condenser.
Thanks for the feedback!

Update:
It is a non running (Due to sitting) green 1983 cab, with unknown miles(79k since imported and odometers swapped, no A/C with the A/C compressor and evaporator removed (in Houston), that needs new paint and is missing the fog lights, I also thing the shocks need replacing....
but
has had the oil fed tensioner upgrade and a recent clutch, has been owned and garaged by the same person for the last 20 years, and is relatively stock.
I offered him 14k cash, he wants 20k. I passed on it but I understand both perspectives.
Any more thoughts?
Thanks Pete for talking with me the other night!
