997.2 S vs 991 base
Disclaimer: I know there have to be threads on this and I'll prolly get chastised for stirring the pot, asking a subjective question, etc., but, hey, this is car Forum and we all love cars, so what the hell..
I bought my 987.1 CS back in June and I absolutely love it. Having not previously owned Porsche, I thought it would be an affordable way to get into one of my dream car brands. Little did I know it would be like main lining a drug and I would just want more soon.
So, now I'm looking at the 997.2 S becoming affordable fast, and the base 991 not far behind it. I saw several people say in other threads, go for newer, newer is better, etc. But I think I'd be looking at another year's wait before they're truly in the same price point as the 997.2 S is now. Should I wait it out and keep driving my baby 987 S for a while and wait for the 991 base to come down a bit? Or hop over to the 997.2 S?
Cheers,
GPd

Well, hop on over to the 997 and 991 Forums where you'll find model specific owners and information.
Out here, we deal with the old post-356s--the original 911s through '89. Though many of us here do have vertical collections and experiences through the newest cars.

I would look at a 997 GTS with aero kit. To me that's one of the nicest modern 911s.

Sorry about that. I was posting from my phone and thought I was in the general 911 discussion forum.

I can't say about 991, but as the owner of a 997.2S for closing in on two years & 20K miles, I can truthfully say, it's been an awesome ride. Just enough modern conveniences (for example, seat heater for the cranky back), but still engaging. If you have enough cash to buy an older model now, versus saving and waiting, why wait? Life's too short!

Drive them. If nothing it's good research if & when you decide to jump in on the 991. As you can see in those forums, there are strong feelings both pro-991 and pro-997 generation 911s, and so you'll have seat time in both and can decide which is best for you…T

So, I drove a 997.2 S today. While it was a far more refined vehicle than my baby 987 S, frankly, I was a tiny disappointed; but that may be more related to the fact that it only had two pedals than anything else. Outside of sport/sport plus mode, the throttle response was pretty lethargic, which was perhaps my only real complaint. Does everyone just drive in sport mode all the time??
The PDK definitely changes gears lightning fast compared to any other automatic I've driven, although the downshifting in deceleration took some getting used to.
I guess the only pertinent thing to do now is go drive a 991 and compared the apples, eh?

Someone was telling me tonight at PCA that the PDK actually learns your driving habits after a while. That's pretty badass.
But several people agreed that it's not much fun in normal mode... Can the computer be set to leave sport mode on? While fun, Sport+ might be a bit much for daily commute, but sport felt just right for putting around town.
Also, the one I drove had the steering wheel button shifters. I think I would be a lot less critical of the paddle shifters. The buttons and/or stick bump were not especially engaging.

Thanks. As mentioned above, I didn't understand that while posting from the app. I would be happy to move it to the 997 or 991 forum, but, alas, I am not a moderator.

Drove a 981 S today, even though I wasn't really looking in that direction. It was a PDK, but again lacking paddle shifters. Like the 997.2, it was fast shifting and fast in general, and the finish out was soooo nice compared to to 997.1 and my baby 987.1... But I think I'm just hooked on rowing through gears. My first vehicle was a 77 Jeep CJ7, and it was manual, of course. Maybe I'm having a third life crisis and trying to reconnect to my youth? My 987.1 CS is the first manual I've owned since then and I just abso-frickin-love it.
Is it a waste to move up to a 997.2 CS, 991, or even a 981 CS and get a manual? I know PDK is faster and more efficient, but... Y'all get it, right...?

Either way I have been driving autos always using manual mode for 10+ years now. I find it works fine, except for the thing discussed in another thread, that the direction of whether push away means up or down has been gotten wrong by Porsche before the 991 gt3. Very annoying. But I don't miss the clutch. As long as the transmission locks up properly in manual mode I'm fine.
