997.2 S vs 991 base
I mean it just had the old style button shifters: http://www.porscheaustin.com/certifi...20f869738a.htm Those things are just not fun, and, as you said, very annoying.
"Nice out"? I meant the interior finish out is much nicer, by a HUGE margin.

Maybe it's not as clear cut as I think, but the two cars look very different to me. The 991 is simply gorgeous. It will be gorgeous in 20 years. The 997.2 looks like the version they did before they got it right...
All the Turbos look good, though. I would wait for a 991 or get into a 996 or 997 Turbo.
All that said, the Cayman is a hell of a car. Indeed, it's the better sportscar. Be careful you're not just looking to spend money to alleviate some other boredom...I tend to fall into that trap...

That said, I still haven't driven the 991. I agree that it is definitely more attractive as far as aesthetics are concerned, at least compared to the 997.2. I'm going to hunt down a 991 to test drive, then reevaluate all of them and go from there.

Every series they get more and more bloated. Faster, sure, but not as fun to drive. Look at one of the behemoth 991's next to an early car. Kinda lost the thought of sports car on the way.

I do enjoy the connection I feel to the road in my 987, even if it does make for a less comfortable ride over longer drives. I guess a lot of the difference I feel is in the elec power-assist steering and suspension in the newer vehicles...? The relative small size must have something to do with it, too, even it's only fractionally smaller than the 981, 997 and 991.

Totally this. The 991 has gotten way too big for my taste. I know it's extremely capable, no doubts about that, but I wish it were 10 inches shorter and had a 5 inch shorter wheelbase.

Are there any updated door panels for the 997 available?
Thinking:
Thinking:
- No carpet on the doors.
- Why not give us door pockets?
- Some form of trim option, exchangeable like they are everywhere outside the Porsche world. Just things that can be wrapped in vinyl properly would help a lot.

Also interesting...I'm weighing a 996tt vs a Cayman S with PASM next year. I've read the PASM is comfier than the base suspension on one end, and stiffer than sport on the other end. Best of both worlds, all for just a bunch of money...

It's a vicious, self defeating endeavor trying to pick one over the other when it comes solely to body design. Please let me know when you figure out a sure fire way to decide!

I never thought I would write this... I have always like manual transmissions... the sales guy convinced me to test drive a PDK 997... wow! Not what I was expecting. I liked it a lot, and the sound of that thing rev matching on the downshifts... wooohh!! Sweet....
I too prefer the looks of the 991 over the 997.2
Best of luck in your search of your next car...
