Default '70 911 E - My first air-cooler: What to ask?

Howdy,

My one-car-stable is currently consumed by an '11 3.8RS. Love the car, but recently had my first proper drive in an air-cooler.

Long story short, I need to add one to the family.

I've found a car with a reputable mechanic that I think I love. I'm looking for something mechanically sound that I can drive like a thief - not concerned with aesthetic, paint, etc.

Details:

- 1970 911 E Chassis
- 2.7L Motor from a "later car"
- Dual Webbers / hot-rodded to some extent, sounds AMAZING
- Rear window, etc. converted to perspex
- Full cage, race buckets, harness, etc.
- The car was never raced, but was built for the track (TT's, etc.)
- Currently setup for street
- 901 Dog-leg tranny with some kind of short shift kit
- Proper Fuel cell with supporting pan replaced
- No Rust visible, floors were stripped and re-painted at some point
- '72 RS rear fenders, rolled fronts
- "race" headers (no heat, don't care for heat)

The car is currently with the mechanic, I'm told it recently had the tranny "re-built", clutch, synchros, etc., the "seals on the engine replaced" (no more leaks).

Since this is my first foray into classic car ownership - what should I ask? What are things to look out for with these chassis and what I believe to be a motor from a '74-'77?

Any help is greatly appreciated. I'd love to send the mechanic a curated list.

regardless of how in love you are with the mechanic , you should really be paying closer attention to the car

look up Pete Zimmermans PPI check list, that is a great place to start .. but your mech should know most of this .

There is simply to much to regurgitate as he did a great job in his write up.

Agreed on above and I hear you after that first drive. My first drive was actually in my car before I bought it! My friend owned it and I fell in love, sure enough, I bought it from him a year later and have owned it past 5 years. I had a new '09 997.2 S at the time, with work done to it, yet the 3.2 still stole the show. Good luck!

I am in the same boat.

Have a 997.1RS, fell in love with an old air cooled 1972 converted to RS.
It would complement my 997RS but i know nothing of pre 964 air cooled cars, especially one that is no longer original. Hard to put a price on it.

I have mulled it over and over in my head. Trying to figure a price regardless of the owner's ridiculous asking price. In the meantime i bought a 1969 shell to build my own version of a 911 hotrod. At least i will know what is in it.
But I still have a lust for that 72 RS clone however.
If i wasnt afraid of what might be under the paint etc... i would have more confidence. But once flares are added and a color change it is game over for originality pricing.

Basically, here is my thoughts on your find.

1970E if numbers matching and restored is $100k +
In project form it still would fetch $30k.
Driver would be $50s...

Non numbers matching, with roll cage, plexi window, modified fenders etc... basically a race car with a license plate. Hard to put a price on it regardless of the build cost.

My first observation would be the bodywork. How were the flares installed. Paint and filler can hide a lot of mistakes... and a race car is never really built to be show car.

Roll cage. Who built it? What diameter? is it PCA legal etc?

The engine and tranny are magnesium case.
Most likey the engine was rebuilt to fix the head stud issue commonly found in 74-77 2.7L

Lot of other things that experts car chime in on here....

What is the asking price? (CDN)

I would say the car has to be in the $50k asking range if it shows well. (give or take $$ given exchange rates).
