Opinion on replacing rotors
Hello. I am in the process of having the front break calipers restored on my 77 Carrera 3. The front rotors are not bad but they are not perfect. I feel like it is a good idea to replace the rotors. This car is not a track car. It will only be driven on the weekends. Would you recommend going OEM or another route?
Thanks

Troy, as a cheep yank, I would use them until they are worn out or warped. They have a minimum thickness measurement for wear that you can easily measure or have measured. Once at or near that min thickness, I would replace them.

What is the consensus on maintaining originality? I can get the Zimmerman cross drilled zinc for about 40$ less per rotor than the OEM's. Will a change in rotors affect the value of the car? I'm just leaning towards everything being new is the best job. I could always save the stock ones. They do have some slight waves in them and they are 38 years old.

Go new. Your reasoning is sound. New bearings, new rotors, new pads, new bearing seals. No point in skimping on such a critical safety item. ....and go cross drilled....they look cool

I give 10% off for Rennlister's, that should help a little on a brake job. Here's a link to the front rotors for a 77 911. CLICK HERE.

If you have not already visited their site, you might want to look at PMB Performance in Utah. http://www.pmbperformance.com/catalog.html
They are "brake freaks" and do it all and know all when it comes to Porsche brakes. Eric did all of the brakes on my 914-6. Terrific people.

the difference between dealer channel rotors and Zimmerman branded rotors is usually the zinc corrosion coating on the hub areas, if you care about looks the dealer supplied rotors will usually stay better looking longer.
I'd only replace the rotors if the are below spec, which is 18mm(new they are 20mm) or if they have become impregnated w/ oil(it's rare to not be able to smaitize them)

Bill is right on the cross drilling. They only look cool on one side of the car....on the other, they are backwards. ...spiraling inwards, instead of outwards. In other word they don't make a left and a right rotor like on the turbos.

is it just me or does anyone else have trouble in wearing out rotors. i dont track my car but jeez , 10 years later and my rotors are still in spec, same with my Audi, go through a fair number of pads but the rotors seem tough as nails.

Jack Olsen touches on this in one of his videos.....even on the track they seem to last forever. I think he said his rotors have lasted through 10 years of track abuse. My stock rear rotors lasted 25 years and only came off so I could match the drilled fronts I put on. I only lost my fronts to bad wheel bearings. My drilled Zimmerman rotors (now collecting dust) lasted several years looking like I put them on just days before. My 930 rotors look like they haven't even been installed.

oe drilled front track rotors last maybe ~2k mi
aftermarkets front slotted ~8k mi
rears ~5k mi
tracks like WGI & Moticello are tough on rotors, LRP not so much
