My 89 3.2 has a plate on the driver side saying it was made in Aug 88 if that helps... Something made in Sept 86 could be an 87 model.

My '85 was built in 10-84 per the door jamb plate. Serial number ends in 0128.

Production for the next model year almost always starts in July. There's no way you would find an '86 model with a Sept prodate. That is guaranteed to be an '87.
