Default Air Cooled Bubble?

So where do you all stand on the air cooled pricing bubble? Have we hit top? Is it still a "good" time to buy?

83' SC--88' G50 is where I'm looking. Not to flip or invest for sure, just pure driving, but I don't want to loose my butt if I had to sell the next day or 10 years later.

I'm sure this discussion has been beat to hell here; sorry.

It's not a bubble if is doesn't pop. I consider it a frothy market correction. And it's not done yet.

See post #19 for the real cost of ownership.
https://rennlist.com/forums/911-foru...-needed-2.html
Sales prices have lagged behind maintenance costs for decades. They are finally catching up. $30k SCs and $40k 3.2 Carreras are about to become fairly common. As more people buy them and spend $10k or more in the first 12-24 months of ownership, they will solidify the current pricing trend.

I'm clearly in the not a bubble camp. I think that it's going to slow down and level off within the next 6-12 months. But it will not pop. There will be no major contraction.

So, for cross examination purposes, an 86' 3.2 TARGA with 57k on the clock in VERY good original condition (85 out of 100 I'd say) with good leak-down/compression, 16" Fuch's, recent pro Porsche mechanic tranny rebuild, all records, seemingly needing nothing, from a reputable person with good references. Your guessing price today?

I just need a gauge . . . OH!, and your "bubble" guess too. Kind thanks!

Meteor Grey. I know Targa's aren't very desirable, but the color -may- be since the color is odd. No tail.

$35-38k. Maybe a little more if it 100% original paint.

In my ignorant opinion - mostly based on talking with other people like me who never had a Porsche but are considering buying one - I would say that demand for very good, unmolested clean aircooled Ps might remain strong for some time. The "runs straight" cars repainted in different colors with aftermarket this and that may be a bit more vulnerable to repricing from a bad economy / bad stock market etc. type of shock.

Who knows if its even a bubble and if so the ferrari one has not popped, maybe its a cycle like real estate?

What i do know is demand is high especially over seas germany and japan

Cars sent by the container

I would say this if you can find one you like and can afford buy it undoubtedly, i doubt youll ever loose money.
In the words of jay leno buy a car you like even if its not a collectable youll still be stuck wth a car you like

On the whole in general cars are bad investiments

The are fun

I feel its a safe buy, look for a nice one the best one you can afford and if you can get a good deal jump on it.

I just personally wouldent daily drive it

Agree ^
Say you waited till the bubble burst to buy, could be 1-2yrs from now or never. By time price would gone up 10-30% compare to today, bubble burst, bad economy will bring price down 20%. Unless you expect the bubble will bring price down to $10k SC and $20k Carrera, why not buy now and enjoy it sonner? Just my .02

No bubble.

Yes, the prices have gone up but so have the wealth of the folks who buy these cars.
Today's auto sales report bear this out as well. Average car prices have gone up 4% and sporty cars like BMW's up even more at 6.5% in the past year.
So air cooled classic 911's going up significantly doesn't surprise me.

The SC's and Carrera's are the first modern 911's IMO and are still driven all the time. I see at least one or more every week on the road here in the bay area.

OP, I don't think we've hit the top, I think it's finally really starting to take off. IMO, it's still not a foolish time to buy.

Paying $65K to a flipper for a sub-par example.. ya, that would be a bad idea.

There are reasons the high dollar cars are still just sitting there.

If the '83 -88 market is being taken over by the wealthy collectors, it may be time to look elsewhere for a regular guy like myself.

Are 964s next? 993s are already priced high, but maybe not relative to the 83-88 group
