We are in a global economy... if I have a company in Youngstown Ohio, I can hire a financial analyst in India or East Lansing... makes no never mind to me as long as they get the job done.

I can ship a 3.2 Carrara from Santa Fe to San Jose or San Marino for roughly the same money.

I'll keep driving my 964. It has 121K on it. Dad bought it new in 1993 and it was a daily driver (except in winter) until about 2000. Lots of DE miles on it. Drivers seat spent 2001-2010 in my parents' basement. He thinks I should put a cage in it and race it or if these get into the 50s I should sell it. I'm too sentimental and want to keep it in the family.

So, what say you guys on the 74-77 2.7 cars? Most all of the ones I see have had the known shortcomings and upgrades addressed by now, are they up too?

Isn't that funny? Five years ago, $14k for an SC targa was about right for a very good driver. Now all it will get you is a roller...

I know you guys love em, but they're no way in the same league as a newer Porsche. I've owned 4 air cooled Porsches, and no way would I pay the prices. Investment, OK. but no comparison.

Definition of better is a frame of mind. All offer a different experience and the cost of that experience has risen with the older cars. Bubble or not my 89 is just as fun to drive as my rs. Sure rs is better in every way except fun. They are equal at that. And that s why most of us buy these things.

No one ever said they were. Now, let's find "value" in a 356..........

(And understand there's a gap from '99-'08, absent the GT and Turbo, where you're taking a gamble on having to basically buy your car again with an engine puke.)

I can't say I understand anyone that tries to compare a new car to an old old one....and concludes that the new one is better in every way. We all know the newer the 911, the faster, more comfortable, quieter, easier to drive and reliable the machine is. If those are your sole criteria to choose a fun car....do not buy a >20 year old 911. It seems that even with the recent run up in prices, currently the owners of these cars are more attached to them than they would be to the money that they would get for them. Cheers

Believe it or not the 997 and 991 don't even come up on my radar of cars I'd like to own.

However, since I got my Driver's licence in 1984 and had my first heart attack in 1988, that is sort of my sweet spot for cars.

Real P0rN for me is this:

here's my $.02

the money to be made is found at a below mkt purchase. don't go paying retail and expect a decent roi. but at retail you could still avoid the losses you'd experience with a watercooled. ie, $50k 993 better investment than a $50k 996/7. and both cars are beyond warranty.

I recently talked to a few guys with new accumotos and some new long hood hot rods from flat6. these guys can drive whatever they want. a few of them dumped their 997s and 991's for these backdated classics. the prevailing comment was this "I love my air cooled car because I can feel it. I know I'm driving. and I can run it up the tach and thru the gears and not get thrown in jail."

but the overriding theme is authenticity and sensation.

Porsche could reintroduce the air cooled cars with less tech and perfection. like a stripped out cayman with a 3.2 motor. they could bundle every sale with some sort of high mpg hybrid or e-car to keep the café stds in check.

bubble? not in the $25-30k car mkt that I can play in. and if my $30k purchase becomes $24k in a year or two. oh well. that's a ski trip.

$550k 993 turbo s? I guess that depends on how the hedge funds and blackjack tables perform. a 10% increase is much more difficult to accomplish.

compare the air cooled trend to the e30 m3 mkt. makes our cars look pretty reasonable.

Yep, Ken, that's the class of cars that just absolutely wakes me from my dreams. 'Course I'd take anything the Kremer brothers produce, but give me an old DP/Kremer/934/935.

Ken, check this out....It's the one in the vid:
