Default 1987 911 Cabriolet Top Help

Hello. I am a new Porsche owner after owning Alfa Romeos for the past 30 years. My Dad decided it was time to pass on his 1987 911 that he bought new. It has been sitting since 2010. After new fuel it runs fine but when I try to lower the convertible top by pressing the rocker switch under the dash I hear a click but it doesn't lower the top. Can someone point me in the right direction or tell me how to lower it manually? It mentions using the tool provided in the glove box to unlock then lower but my Dad said he always did it electronically and doest remember having tools to do it. Any help would be much appreciated. Todd

Mine is a manual top. I think the tools reference is for the removable handles that unlatch the manual tops.

If I were you, I wouldn't mess with it. I haven't put my top down in years and don't plan to do it anytime soon. Rumor has it that electric tops are a nightmare.

On a more positive note, you got the car I wanted. Must have looked at every 911 within 100 miles of So Cal trying to find a decent white cab. You are a lucky man.

Yes, your car looks great (I am biased). Mine is an '85 with the manual top so I don't know anything that might help you with this problem.

My top only goes up when I wash the car.

Hm.. I didn't see anything, but try taking a look in our tech articles here and see if you can find something that may be helpful. Might be able to call a local dealership and see if they are able to look up said tool. If not you can give us a call and speak with a specialist that may be able to help you put it down manually.

I have an auto top and it is pretty good.

Step one...check your owners manual for directions..is your emergency brake on and key to start or run? Check your fuses and relays. If still no work, you can swap out your top ECU at http://www.ecudoctors.com. I'v used them for the DME and cab top control board. Quick turn around times and great service.
Step two...for emergency operation (opening or closing) you can use the tool in the tool kit in the front trunk. If you don't have it, you can order it on Pelican or Suncoast Porsche websites. You will want to practice it once so when you get caught in a torrential thunderstorm you can do it quickly.
Step three...unzip the plastic rear window if temps are below about 45 degrees
Step four...attache the canvas boot over the opened top...looks better and prevents wind damage
Step five...purchase the cabriolet windstop if the buffeting bothers you. I just bought one and it is very nice though without it was fine with me, but not my wife's hair.

Why is this recommended - to keep the cold (more brittle) plastic from cracking when the top is put down?

Thanks,
