G50 shifter bushing
#3
Hey Burke. This was one of the first jobs I did. It was pretty straightforward. My donut bushing was in pieces and explained thenrattleninwas getting on acceleration. The hardest part of the job for me was getting the shift rod reattached. I struggled with this for quite a while but eventually got it. One other thing. I wasn't really happy with the feeling (too much friction) when I was done. Based on a few suggestions here, I took it apart again and applied some white lithium to the rod. Good luck.

Without the bushing, you get what they used to call "G50 Rattle". Even with the bushing installed, some 87's and a few early 88's may still have some rattle, but they pretty much fixed the problem mid year 88. My 87 had the rattle, but my 88 doesn't. Go figure. Lube, Lube, Lube is the key to smooth operation. Just enuf to make it easy to shift.

I got my parts for this job from Pelican. For me, the Bentley manual was the best investment I made. If you are planning DIY projects, especially if you are a novice like me, it is invaluable.

That tech article addressed shifters up through 1986. It does not address the G50. As stated in one of the comments, the 87-89 G50 and the 964 G50's have different parts. I've not seen any tech article that addresses the G50.
