if you want something that will go up in value air cooled 911
if you want a porsche to daily drive 996.
I had a chance to get a another 911 (996) yellow 2001 99k miles for 10,500 1 owner off my friend. I was considering buying it to drive to work 5 miles a day 5 days a week for the hell of it. But I opted for a 4wd pickup.
if reliability is important your gonna have to spend some $$ to get a nice aircooled.
Id recomend early 80's 3.O Cis fuel inj 911 in 911 sc in great shape. you can score one for 30k maybe alittle under.
if your gonna daily drive it and not care about it loosing value then get a nice 996.
personally i dont like the 996, they got rid of the porsche trademark round lights and added a radiator in the same year.
as said before its a matter of taste

Three Wheelin'
You are really comparing apples and oranges. Those two cars are totally different. The first assumption is the car would pass a PPI. Either one could be expensive to fix depending on the issue.
The 996 is luxury and modern compared to a 3.2. The 3.2 is somewhat raw and more visural. It will be a lot easier to find a 996 vs. 3.2. This is totally taste/preference. Of course, the 3.2 will continue to appreciate in value which could be a plus.

Another option is a 964 or 993... these are a great combination of air-cooled tradition and modern amenities...
Unfortunately, these are appreciating in today's market, so finding a good one under $40K will take some work, but IMHO, they also have some investment potential.
