Default Fully detailed chassis- Strange.. Not original but someone spent a lot of time...

Being bored tonight I was perusing Ebay (always good for a good chuckle and the occasional WTF!) looking at the various Air-cooled 911's. I came across 2 G50 3.2 cars and a 930 being offered by the same seller in Florida. Cleary someone has spent a tremendous amount of time preparing the underside of both of these cars to look pristine. What caught my attention is that while the untrained eye sees pristine, I see everything is wrong. The painted the fenders black (should be body color) and they took the time to re-Cosmoline the whole underside. The color match for factory Cosmoline is almost spot on, but the factory never applied it so evenly or liberally. Its funny, if you didn't know you would assume the factory would have been so tidy.

I can't be the only OCD guy who cringes over how incorrect it is yet is a little bit impressed they went to so much effort. I see a lot of these cars where they just rattle can the exhaust. This is a whole different level of that!

Am I just delusional or is this crazy market causing people to do some really strange things?

Here are the cars:

Lest anyone think I don't know what a factory correct chassis looks like, here is my 1988 3.2 Carrera as viewed from underneath:

Notice the fenders should be body color, not blasted black:

Nathan, that is amazing work on your '88. If you ever need to channel that OCD, I'll bring over my '97!

The black paint on the 930 would be correct for certain years and markets.

I have only seen early cars, never anything in the IB era with anything other than body color fender wells, certainly nothing in the 930 (75+) era. Is there a market where the finish was different?

Could not fathom finding such a clean unused car. Mine was used on salted roads and it shows.

Also, I have no issue with the black paint under the fender well especially against bright paint.

....But then again, I am the guy that almost fully RS's his lowly cab.

For example I inspected a 1 owner 6,000 mile 88 930 last year and the wells were body color but after reading the link I looked under a few 89 Speedsters and they were black.

I obsess over this stupid stuff that probably doesn't matter. So I dug back through my photos and found undercarriage shots I had taken of a 9 original mile (not a typo, odometer read 000009 miles!) 1989 Black speedster. I didn't have a lift but here is what shots I could take of it. I assumed they were black because the car was black but now that I look closely they are definitely coated in a Wurth type of coating.

Here is that car, it's definitive that WB cars seemed to be sprayed black, now the question is why??

Could the use of the different coatings correspond with the changes made to the corrosion warranties required in different countries for different models and model years? For example, the warranty in 1981 for the turbo was increased to 7 years. A few years later it was increased to 10. The 911CS (M637) got the 10 year warranty in 1989, etc.

Should it concern me more that you're one of at least 2 people who live within a mile of me who are that OCD, or that it doesn't really seem that obsessive to me?!
