Replacing tires on my 1971 911T
I still have the original Fuchs (5.5 X 14) and was wondering what size tire would look and work best on the car. Anyone have a preference?
Thanks....
Thanks....

Depends on what you want to do.
Assuming you want to preserve the original look of the car, go with the factory spec. Lots of good re-pros in those sizes.
You can also do a "plus 1" which increases the width by 10-20mm... for example if the OEM is 165/75, you can do a 185/75, and it will fit the wheel.

Back in the day, the OEM manufacturers were Michelin, Pirelli, and Continental.
A small manufacturer, like Porsche, would typically spec a tire buy to a supplier, buy in a lot, and install, and as one lot ran out, they'd procure another lot, so its not likely that you can determine what tire was actually installed on your car.

Sorry but there is some missleading data on this thread
14" wheels should fit 185R14 tyres. that is full profile not 185/70R14. so the best one at present is the Michelin MXV-P http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page...lin-mxv-p.html It is the carcase structure of the Michelin that makes it so much better than any thing else. It was the comfort models that fitted 14" tyres. less wheel and more tyre side wall improved the ride.
15" wheels fitted 165R15 originaly. out of the original equipment tyres you can still get Pirelli Cinturato Michelin XAS

The when low profile tyres were invented they fitted 185/70VR15 again you can still get the Michelin XWX, and Pirelli have just re manufactured the 185/70VR15 CN36 in the picture below. Avon do make a racing CR6ZZ which is also a realy good tyre.

I thought it might be use full to explain the fitment for 15" wheels because I thought this bit was a bit misleading "You can also do a "plus 1" which increases the width by 10-20mm... for example if the OEM is 165/75, you can do a 185/75, and it will fit the wheel."
i don't think any Porsche fitted 165/75 though they did fit 165R15 (not a 70 profile, or 75 profile) they did however fit a 185/70R15 which is the same diameter as a 165R15
165/75 of 185/75 is the wrong diameter on either 14" or 15" wheels.
I was trying to make it simple. It probably didn't work. sorry i wasn't intending to be a pedant, but people do get lost in tyre descriptions.

Sorry. Slow response. Busy shoveling snow...
Very good info here. Great resource. Been a while since I've heard "pedantic" used on this site... a refreshing change...
BTW, if you want to hear about "semi-trailing arm lift-throttle oversteer", I'm always at your service.
