Default sparkplugs and tuning question

'83 SC w/ 930-10 row 204 hp w/SSI's dansk rsr 2/2 muffler ( so 220?). Otherwise stock but car is lightened up by about 300 lbs.
I was running NGK BPR7ES plugs...factory calls for BPR9ES so I just put in a set only one grade hotter the 7's...the 8's.
I do run the CO fat and idle at an afr of 13.
The car ran great with the 7's but thought I'd err on the side of caution with the 9.8 to 1 comp. and AZ heat.
I swear I can feel a loss of crispness with the one level cooler plug.
Is this my imagination or can that happen?

In high school I had the distinct honor of being teacher's pet and crew chief for my auto shop teacher. I had a '64 Barracuda and the teacher had a 426 Hemi Dart factory drag car we actively raced at Riverside.

With every pass the engine got a new set of plugs. I would start with a mountain of new plugs and index them to point in a specific direction to get the best spark and the best burn. Each plug was marked to coincide with the thread pattern on the head. Let's just say that is likely where i learned to be so ****.

Good idea! Gift wrapped or .....

I'm running the 8's (BPR8ES NGK's) for awhile so I can compare the heat range markings and color etc. The 7's ran great but running 2 heat ranges hotter than rec gives me pause in the 9.8 CR and Az temps.....altho the builder uses them and they looked ok.....maybe ran a tad hot but the color was good and after 20k miles the ground and electrode was still sharp with no erosion...still had the proper gap. (I'm being **** too Lamps).

I pulled the 8's (one) after a short drive at full warm and the heat mark was exactly 1/2 way on the ground so it's burning the fuel.

The 7's had some debris on them and that can be from fuel/additives etc. so I want to run the 8's for a bit. Hard to read plugs with today's fuel additives.

Could be I may want 'more' spark not so much hotter so would have to go to an MSD type unit.

Anyways, it's fun messing about.

My rule
Run coldest plugs you can without fouling.

Am leaning in that direction myself. The 8's look just right even tho the 7's looked good.
