Thermal reactors, air pump, and EGR. Any/all of which are not necessary to pass the tailpipe standard. Getting past the visual? Roll of the dice.

Roll 'o the dice. Without the smog items..............stick a fork in registration. There are sections of California that do not require bi-annual smog checks. But, for the initial registration, the requirement may be by the book.
Did all 911 P cars in '77 have the same smog equipment? or, were some states different from California? I have run into this with other marques.

If I understand your thoughts here.. Calif would require, even vintage autos, the presence of XYZ smog gear as well as a tailpipe test? Arizona, 1977, had no smog testing or requirements. Any smog equipment would have been retrofitted I assume. Most of Arizona is rural and does not require any testing. Guess I can call tomorrow and get the rules, as they might apply, for this 38 year old 911... in "wonderful" California... ;D

If you want to go political here, as an ASU grad/Porsche shop owner between my CA residencies, I'd probably be lucky to have a sole 944 Turbo if I stayed there.
