Default 911 engine mod questions

My 88 Carrera (108k miles) is undergoing a top end rebuild - valves, new rings and machine cams to 964 specs. Current cost for that is $4500. My mechanic has suggested going to 3.4 pistons at additional cost of around $1500.
Any comments/advice/ideas will be appreciated. I use the car as a DD but also plan to use it for AX and DE.

Not sure whT else but I may be interested in your 3.2 Pistons and cylinders if they measure out okAy May help you offset some cost Redoing my 3.0 and a 3.2 might be nice.

Sounds pretty generous. Are these parts he has laying around? Do you get your old barrels and pistons?

Default 911 engine mod questions

We didn't discuss who got the old pistons and cylinders when the work order was written. That is why I come to RL, to learn the right questions to ask and I should have done that before the project started. Was thinking someone might comment on the wisdom or folly of going to 3.4 from 3.2.
Maybe the $$ would be better spent on exhaust improvements.

re Mussberger: I take it you think $1500 to go to 3.4 is a fair price to pay?

I think your $1,500 price is a steal. I'd jump at that price. The performance gain that was reported by a good friend was something less than stellar. I have no personal knowledge though.

Perhaps your mechanic is dyslexic.

I don't understand how that it is even possible for 1.5k. Normally, at least over here the only way to 3.4l is changing cylinders and piston. At that is not happening for 1.5k. Even not with used ones.

Something not right, 1500?! No way, not even for just parts, used, unless he is your best friend with good piston cylinder set sitting around. If you go to 3.4 for 1500 ask for pictures of disassembly and new parts going in. A performance cam on your 3.2 is gonna produce gains nevermind the 3.4. Good luck

Thanks to all for the input. We are talking new pistons and bored out cylinders,
not a new Mahle piston and cylinder set. The cams are being ground to 964 specs as part of the overall cost of a top end rebuild. The chance to put J & E pistons into my original 3.2 cylinders bored to 3.4 is what makes the cost minimal. Anyone have an idea on the gain from the larger displacement?

What about the Nikasil?

Actually, its plating, not a coating.
